Trouble with growkit (noob)

Hi ppl!
I've read a bunch of posts in here about the quality of these grow kits, so I know that might be the problem here. However I have some questions about the amount of pins popping up and their location on the cake.
Problem: In my first flush all the pins came up only around the edges. Possible causes: 1. I tried to research what happend here, and one guy wrote that misting before the pins show up is wrong, and could cause this. 2. I've been using a heatmat, but this seems to overheat things to pretty high temperatures, and I changed that halfway in the process, so it only heated somewhat.
I hope some of you can confirm if these are the faults I've been doing, so I can improve my 2. flush.
Thanks!

Misting to keep the top moist is essential, but not so much as to pool water. Forget the heat mat, that's doing more harm than good. Just keep it in a room in low 70's and you're fine. If it's pinning on the sides, be happy because ... IT'S PINNING! The grows you see pictures of with massive pinning all across the surface are generally created through a lot of culturing to find the perfect clone/isolate that likes to pin that way. You are probably growing from a random multi-spore start, so it's hard to be sure why it's pinning on the sides. You might find the second flush pins more from the center.
Side pinning is no big deal if they are growing up as yours appear to be doing ... more of a problem when they are growing down into the bottom of the container.
After you harvest the first flush, be sure to give it a good soak for at least 6 hours in clean water so it can re-hydrate. The second flush might be bigger than the first.

Thanks for your answer! I'm still not quite sure about the misting - do I mist before the pins show? As in when I'm waiting for the pins to show for the next flush (picture is old. I've already harvested, and I'm preparing for the 2. flush).

Mist whenever the top surface appears dry. It's kinda like how we take care of plants. When the soil is dry, you water it.
Although you definitely don't want to mist so much that water is puddling or pooling on top, you definitely want to keep the top wet/moist. Also, when the flush is really growing, you almost can't water too much. Even if it's pooling a bit on top, the cake will suck that water up quickly and channel it to the growing fruits.
How big did your first flush fruits grow? How many inches tall?
I'd also suggest you try taking a spore print of a good fruit from the next flush. That's the key to cheap, self sustaining growing if you want to grow more at low cost. Plenty of advice here on how to do it the right way.

Keep the surface moist and the second flush should be much better. The shrooms are growing near the sides where the RH is higher.

I thought I wasn't supposed to pour water directly on the cake/mushrooms?
Some of the big ones were around 4-5 inches, and then down from there, I totalled around 110g fresh. So I'm pretty happy, but I've had better results!

Im almost 100% positive that side pinning happens because the sides dry out first which is the #1 pinning trigger which cause's side pins.
If that makes sense sorry

I didn't say pour water ... I said mist ... but you can mist pretty heavily when the fruits are really growing fast.
