Oysters on coffee
    #23964553 - 12/29/16 02:23 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

About 20 days ago, I inoculated two bags of cofee mixed with shredded coffee filters and three bags of coffee/coir/verm mixture with some grain spawn I've bought from a commercial grower.

Bags containing only coffee and filters seemed to colonize faster than the other ones, but soon spots of green started to show on the surfaces, so I threw them away.  Bags of coffee/verm/coir mixture did not have any problems of mold though; it's pretty interesting, considering that I've pasteurized all bags in the same pot (surfaces of bags might have got heated a bit too much though, as it took too long to get the middle of the substrate to reach 140 F; so the surface might have got partially sterilised).  Guess coffee alone is more prone to contamination.  Will do some more batches for expermenting.

So this is how the other bags look like now:

How do you think they look?  Are they ready for fruiting, should I cut an X on the front side?  Atm, small GE holes on all surfaces is all they have to let air in.

With straight coffee you will probably have to do a sterilized bag. I have been sterilizing everything supplemented and success rate went way up. Those bags look good to go.

BTW, my throat's been sore since I did my first harvest of oysters today, is it possible that spores may be the cause?  Even though there were no visible loads of spore?

I'm sure it's like allergies it affects people differently. Some of those oysters were opened up so there sure could have been spores.

I need to learn more about using coffee as a substrate. There's a few diners around here I could probably source it from.

It's really easy, I just mixed it with some coir and vermiculite, stuffed in oven bags, and pasteurized .)

Will post picture when they fruit

Coffee is pretty straight forward. I source mine from my local starbucks. I call them up two days before I need it and they usually have a 30lb (wet) bag of coffee for me. I then take it and dehydrate it so I can freeze it.

I use it as half of my needed supplement amount and the other half is bran. I also mix in some gypsum to help counter the acidity of the coffee.

Coffee does like to contam out pretty fast if you don't sterilize it correctly.

Oh wow, I didn't think that a business like starbucks would agree to that. A bunch of local chains have started compacting all waste instead of donating/recycling to reduce liability.

How do you dehydrate coffee?
