Hey everybody, first time posting here, been researching and lurking the boards for about a month or so.
I apologize if this isn't the right place, and if I could have found some of these answers using the search function. With that said I'll get right to it.
From my understanding the PF TEK would be recommended for me, would it be most advised for me to order one online, or gather the necessities and a super market?
Also, I know that contaminants are a big issue and I want to be as clean and hygienic as possible. I understand that when creating and shooting up the cakes it's extra important to be in a very clean area, but I'm curious about afterwords. You see, I share a room with a dog and I was wondering if animal dander in the air is going to be a problem with the cakes and with the fruiting process afterwords.

Also, any other tips for a beginner you could give would be much appreciated

Hello there,

Now im a little new myself, but i've been geeking around this forum for long time. So i'd be able to to give you some hints for your PF. Yea gather the things you need. Make yourself a still air box, get the sterilization gear, isopropyl alkohol etc. Watch some videos on youtube for instructions.

Make you sure you do it right the first time, or it'll cost you more money and time. I've learned that for sure now. I have to redo my shotgun fruiting chamber, because the holes ain't right, lol.

I know that if you have a dog, you got to be sure that you inoculate jars in a place, with clean/still air.

You may be brand new to the hobby, but I highly recommend jumping right to bulk.

IME working with pf cakes and maintaining them in a SGFC proves to be more bothersome and leads to less than satisfactory results if not done perfectly.

However, creating a few monotubs will spit out wayyy more mushrooms than you could every get from a dozen cakes in a SGFC, with less than half the maintenance required.

If you can create the best conditions possible inside your monotub via polyfill and some light misting of the surface, you can have a harvest that you'll be very proud of

Read up on some of Frank's teks and also look into making pasty plates first.

-You have to make the pasty plates to get clean mycelium, then transfer a piece from the outside of the mycelial growth with a scalpel to another plate, repeat 2x. (as shown in the videos).
-Take another outside piece and place it into a sterilized grain jar while working in a still air box, or SAB (as described in the teks)
-Let the jar colonize to about 30%, then shake it up. Let it recolonize completely to 100%.

Once you have clean spawn, you are ready to move onto making your monos! :super:

I recently inoculated 10 cakes via the pf tek for the first time as well. I don't have a flow-hood, but I did create my own still-air box. Can't remember the exact tek I used to construct it, but it's on here somewhere. I went out and bought all the supplies for that and the pf tek myself, rather than ordering online. Didn't have any problem finding everything I needed.

I also have a pupper who I share the house with and haven't had any problems. I inoculated the cakes inside the box (following proper sterile procedure). The jars are sitting in my living room (where my dog normally sleeps) and are just about at 100% fully colonized without any signs of contamination. I do have micro-pore tape over each hole though, just for peace of mind.

And as Psilosoulful said and from everything I researched on here, building a monotub and going to straight to bulk may be a better way to go. As I said, I'm currently in the middle of my first pf tek (my first ever grow as well), and I've already began working with agar and grains which I plan to spawn to bulk in a monotub. I'm not near as experienced as anyone else on here, but I thought advice from another newbie might help. Whichever way you go, good luck!

Long time lurker here as well!

Not sure if Psilo meant to link Frank's name, but I believe he's talking about this members links posted here:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17897217#17897217

I plan on going straight to bulk, and will be making Pasty's plates for my first setup. Although I have plates on the way.

Hope your first grow goes well, and I hope to start a beginner thread beside you soon!  :takingnotes:
