grain jars recovering after shake in 2 days, except for the very bottom...

Is this common?  Should I be concerned. I shook up again, but they were almost 100 last time I shook and all but the bottom was colonized. Could it be because it's colder. They are in Ina tote at room temp. 65 or so degrees. I see no signs of contams or bacteria. But the bottom of jar wouldn't colonize after 2 shakes. Weird.

It sounds like you shook late to me the second time
Its hard to say without a picture whats going on, but no its not normal for only the bottom not to colonize.

did the grains possibly stick to the bottom when you shook the first time?

My guess is that the moisture pooled at the bottom of your grain jar because of inadequate GE from the filter lid.
Or it could just be that contams are packed up along the bottom of the jar and the mycelium refuses to colonize it :shrug2:
Spawn it separately, it may still work out

Bacteria metbis pooling at bottom of jar. Agree just spoon out the good parts when spawning. This happen to me all the time
