Proper sealing of EZ Felt or Tyvek GE Filters onto jar lids?
    #23964316 - 12/28/16 11:34 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I just wanted to clear something up here. I hope you can help me with this quick question.

Im going to make some lids to avoid the verm layer. For a higer succesrate. Lost 3/4 of my last batch to contam. The last one is still colonizing. I have some clues about what went wrong, just want to ensure myself much as possible. And I'm going to make that last juice in my syringe count, so that I can get a flush and do a print. Then the real experiments can begin and also in the future moving on from PF.

Been heavily reasearching here for the last 2 days.

I see some people permanently attaching their Ez felt or Tyvek/combo of those, to their lids. However, I understand that they do not hold for very long and has to be replaced. SFD's are hard to find/get in my area.

So how would you seal these alternative GE filters to your jars?

Ez felt/Tyvek with a couple of strings of micropore tape over it? A sandwich maybe?

Thought was to do a 1/4 hole in the middle for the GE filter and ofc the 3-4 1/8 innoc points with silicone.

Can't get Kerr or Ball jars here, so I use 230 ml widemotuh jars with screw lids. So can't use the double layer pf lid tek.

Hope you can clear this up for noobie me. Hard to find this exact info. Been trying. Ty!

Nice video. Would have been the solution if not only my lids weren't made of metal. hehe. Should have mentioned that. But thx for your answer!

Going to do something like this:

Only If the alternative GE filters are not durable and only lasts for 2-3 cycles through the PC, it would'nt be very convenient to seal them on permanently like that.

I have seen contradictory posts about the durability of these alternative GE filters. Hard to know what is up and down. :/

invest in the plastic lids...they are cheap and far superior to metal

Well I guess I could look out for some plastic lids, that fits my jars.

I just ordered another batch of them, lol.

They look like this:

If you guys have any other suggestions to what I'd might do, it would be highly appreciated!

IME plastic lids suck balls you need to use something where the thread is at so that it seals 100%.

The answer to your question is RTV.  High temp gasket sealer.  I have lids made with ez felt and rtv that have been through 1000's of pc cycles

How 1000s of cycles. Even slurry your spawn and reused the same jar to pc every 3 days your still talking about it working same in pc for ten years. Even sfd dont last that long in consistent use and spore load

Ive been growing over 25 years.  I grow alot.  Yes 1000's of cycles.  Consistent use yes spore load no.  IDK about you but I personally dont get spores until after I fruit.  Me and my friend ran a small oyster farm for about a year or so. Now that was sporeload we had to go out and clean out everything weekly cause our room would get so covered in spores that the fans would start clogging up.

The lids on the bottom i made in '01-02 the ones on the top were just made several months ago.  Bottom ones are sfd material rtv'd while the top ones are ez felt

Nice to know! This is what i have been talking about. Seen experienced growers advocating both sides of this. Some say that their EZ felt lasts very long and some say they have to be replaced after a couple of times in the PC, because the pores close, hindering GE. hehe.

Well lids aint that expensive if something goes wrong anyway, after a couple of times through the PC. The whole idea is to get a good first flush going. But having durable lids would be a bonus. Do you think you could just seal the Ez felt with micropore tape?

How thick is your EZ felt?

I don't want to call anyone out persay but you are giving people credit for being experienced growers that don't really have the credentials here to back the claim....there is a rating system on this forum where people can give ratings based on quality of contribution to the forums and the experience they share...just because someone wants to say they have 25 years cultivation experience after getting called put about a bogus 1000PC cycle lid....but that's coming from a user who registered this week and has no ratings or grow log history here...qualify people for the experience they claim to have...dont just take it for granted they are being honest....and if I had been using a product for 25 years....there would be no "I believe" about it...but rather...its definitely this...

Since you mentioned you are using a verm layer I take you are using BRF cakes with a layer of verm on top.
I hate to say it but if you are having problems with the BRF/verm a different lid may not help.
Are you using a SAB?
A jar with an upside down lid will work just fine without all the fancy....
How do you think your contam got in?

Yep, doing BRF cakes with verm layer on top.

As of today I have lost my fourth jar. So sad.. There were such good colonization going on.. All the contamination occured on the top layer, where sub and verm met. I used an SAB, flamed the needle, the whole thing, wiped with iso etc.

I believe the cause for my contaminations were because the cakes, oddly enough, shrunk. This caused the verm layer to descent at the edges of the jar, exposing the sub. Thats 1 theory.

The second theory, is that the verm layer got a little wet after the PC, even though i used foil tightly wrapped over the lids.

I believe the first theory to be the thing here, because after PC'ed I noticed dry bits of verm had fallen down the sides.

But, now i have nearly gathered all those materials for 3-4 RTV SHIP's and GE tyvek filter in the middle.

Would you recommend a tyvek GE filter, similar to that of Hamloaf's?
Tyvek - micropore tape - tyvek - micropore tape. Or maybe just one layer tyvek and micropore tape?

Also going to do a couple of jars with verm layer and micropore tape over the innoc holes, then PC, then adding a fresh piece to cover the innoc wound.
I am going to be absolutely sure this time. Also going to use the top half of the tyvek coverall when innoccing.

Feedback highly appreciated! Ty guys!

I get your point. I'm just happy to recieve answers though. If any of you experienced shroomers out there got some advice for me, I would be very happy.

Finding plastic lids, which are autoclaveable and fits my lids, will be a hard task. So I am going to stick with the metal lids for now.

I just want to make this work, so I can do a damn print.. Then there will be more room for testing and error.

Mycologist217 gave the best answer with the video from Gr0wer..
Gr0wer grows edibles that he sells to restaurants so he needs lids that work and a jar lost to contams due a faulty lid is money out of his pocket..

Plus lids are cheap.. If you do a run and don't like them then try something new.. Or you can always rip off the felt and go with the good old ball of polyfil
