Hi everyone. This is my first post! I am very excited to harvest my first flush. My cakes are seemingly ready to pin but there haven't been any signs yet. I am open to any and all tips you may have to give. Here is my experience so far.
I got a grow kit that is tub in tub. The outer tub has an aquarium heater in it. From what I have seen this isn't a popular method, but it does seem useful in regulating temperature. I am doing 12 jars. I kept the temperature at solid 78-80 degrees during the colonization process. 5 of the jars took 5 weeks to fully colonize. 4 more were done at the 6 1/2 week mark. 3 are particularly slow with the last 5% of the jars taking a long time, hopefully will be done at the 8 week mark.
Both times cakes were ready I birthed them and dunked them for about 22 hours. I then rolled them. The first batch I could have gotten a larger amount of vermiculite on but the ones I just birthed have what looks like a good amount.
The fruiting chamber is now set up with about 2" of perlite. 78 degrees. When I check humidity is at 90%-99%. I am giving them about 8-10 hours of light a day, though I know temp and humidity are more important factors than light.
Ok so now that I have explained that, I have a few questions.
The guide I'm using has been quite good. It had me set up an air pump with the hose going through one small hole in the bin but didn't explain what it did. I assumed it was to maintain humidity. The pump goes on for 1 1/2 hours at 7am and at 7pm. The guide didn't say anything about FAE so I didn't know about that until I researched a bit... I also didn't know about misting.. Is the air pump meant to replace FAE and if u dunk and roll your cake does it still need to be misted? Should I still open up the lid for fresh air and mist the cakes? How often? What temperature is too hot for fruiting? I could easily get it up to 81-85 degrees. What temp is too hot for colonization?
The guide said pinning should start to occur between 7-10 days after dunking. I have also seen people say as little as 4 days. Today is the 10th day so I am not quite confused or worried yet, but is there something I am doing wrong?
Lastly, I am doing both B+ and Golden Teachers. Honestly I don't know which cake is which. I don't think this is a problem. Is it?
Thank you so much. I am very excited! Here are pictures of the setup.
