Question regarding agar culture transfer

So my ms inoculated petri's are reading for transfers. I'm currently prepping new agar for the transfers.
I am wondering when you cut the small section out of a leading edge of mycelium do you cut down all the way to the bottom of the agar and then transfer to a new plate? Or do you just cut away at at the surface level of the mycelium?

Cut it down and poke the piece of agar gently with your scalpel blade. Lift it up and transfer it to another dish. It does not matter if the uncolonized side is placed on the new dish. The mycelium starts to regenerate about 2-3 days after cutting and will continue to grow. I like to cut triangles. It is fast because you just need 3 cuts. But everyone has his own preferences.

Ok thanks guys.
Enlightenment you are very helpful I must say. I'd say the vast majority of questions I've had in the past few weeks have been answered by yourself. You are a gentleman and a scholar!

i just tried to get a rice grain sized sample from the leading edge... never tried to go to the bottom of the dish. All you need is a tiny piece of mycelium.

Ok good to know. No doubt I would have seen the fuzz and started thinking mold.

I recently tried something a little different on my last round of transfers. I used an inoculation loop to just scrape a small amount of mycelium from the surface of the agar then I just sliced the loop into the receiving plates agar. For most of the transfers I couldn't even see any myc on the loop but surprisingly, to me anyway, it worked on 9 out of 10 transfers. I think this may be how I do my transfers from here on out.
