my catha eduilis grow from seed 1

ive tried repeatedly to grow this plant with hundreds of seed I bought from a random website and not a single one ever came close to germinating. this time ive bought from a reputable shroomery vendor these seeds came in a special sealed baggie with the seeds themselves being in another baggie inside, the last place was just a hand full of seeds in a big cheap baggy. So im hoping they were just duds.
day 1 I know ferral has a monster plant would love to get mine to that stage

Theres already a thread in the sub forum of the EG called Official Khat Grower's Thread, it just doesn't get posted in frequently, i'll post some pics tonight after work of my little ones. I lost about 1/3 of them by transplanting them outside too soon, they burned.

I forgot to take pictures when the sun was up, I kept 3 indoors (first 3 pics) on the off chance we have a hard frost again this year. I lost some when I tried transplanting out front in late September. The ones in the front yard that did survive mostly stalled out, haven't grown much. Just like the ones on the porch(last pic). The one doing the best is the one that gets the least amount of sun(4&5). when I was reading about this plant it said they like full sun. Not here they don't, not as seedling anyways. I live in zone 9B. They are a little more than 5 months old.

What a great forum, and another great thread! I've had several Khat for about a year. I germinated some seeds, but ended up killing all but one. The rest are from cuttings or rooted plants I traded for. With Khat, I basically use the same soil mix as I do with cactus, even with seeds. I was able to root a few cuttings that were sent to me, lost some too. I just clipped my plants and I'm trying to root them. There was a very interesting thread about Khat on the Lycaeum, written by a Khat farmer in South Africa. It's worth a look. He says that frequent pruning keeps it easy to harvest and increases potency. I've only had mine a year, but my general impression about growing Khat is to treat it kind of like a cactus when it comes to soil and watering.

As ferel astutely pointed out, there's already an "official thread" for Catha edulis cultivation. In the interest of consolidation and avoiding having multiple main topics about the same thing, it would be best if you could add to that thread which you can find here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13184004
Cool?

On the second page of the 'Official Khat Growers Thread' you can find the reason why they moved it to the Ethnobotanical Grow Logs and Pictures subforum.
Also, karode13 mentioned this on the first page of that thread:

Here is a photo of my catha edulis being grown in water. If you have been watching my posts you'll realize I am quite fond of growing in nutrients with medicine bottle containers. So far no rot. But the plant is suspended a got 1-1.5 inches above the water so the base of the plant is not submerged. From what other green catha looks like I would say it needs higher strength nutrients. What does everyone else this. It looks more like a lime green.

Nice plants here.
Here are mine, I have a big one which has tons of little shoots coming from the bottom which I usually pull and replant so got them all over. They actually grow like weeds.

Amazing tree semaphore. Where do you live if you don't mind me asking. Do you have to bring him in each winter? And what size pot do you have him in? Also how old is your plant?

The tree is about 6 years old, perhaps a little bit older. I stay in South Africa, I never bring them in its way to much effort :P. Our winters can get pretty cold. But they've survived outside so no need to bring them in.
The pot size im not 100% sure its not big and it does need to be put into the ground or transplanted at some point. I'd say its around a 60L pot right now.

My fucking khat plant died. I was away for a bit, and couldn't care for it. I'm pissed. I've been trying over and over to get one of these plants to maturity, and something always fucking happens.

Sorry to hear it bud, I have the same problem with kratom, I even had one plant for almost 3 years, they are suppose to be easy but something always goes wrong, usually lack of water but the oldest plant succumbed to disease

Hey guys, so I have about 4 small cuttings that finally took root after nearly 6 months of waiting. One of them I recently acclimated to outdoors. I had it in a grow tub that was kept at high humidity before and around 78F. Now that it's outdoors I have it in almost entirely indirect light, I'm gonna move to a spot soon to start with about an hr of morning light and then slowly move it away from that wall. It's been pretty hot outside lately though, way hotter than the grow tub was. Should I be watering it more often? I was thinking maybe a light watering every other day?

Good job on the rooting!
Cuttings I received in the mail a while ago, even with a super quick transit time of a day or so came out a bit mangled and never recovered from that..
But I have two seedlings now, let's hope this goes right!

I killed 3 of my khats not completely on purpose but i moved to a new house and have no room for them. So i put them outside in the current British heat wave and 3 out of 4 fried because i was very preoccupied with sorting the house. The last one Ive nursed back to health and im watering it daily.

I have allways thought Khat was a desert plant and thus liked hot and dry conditions. However, when asked around here i have understood Khat plants do need to be watered quite frequently and is not the dry loving plants i thought. Your plan with a light watering every other day seems to be a good starting point but if you see they seem very dry you probably can increase that a bit, especially as it´s quite hot and dry now. All adjusted depending on weather and temps of cause.

I was gonna say the same Mateo, but I thought as well that khat really shouldn't be given too much water (which is puzzling given how you are supposed to root cuttings but I guess that is not the same).
For seedlings of many types of plants, more water does generally seem to be preferable it seems.. I keep my seedlings in a propagator which prevents too much evaporation. But thanks for substantiating my suspicion to not keep it overly dry especially in infancy..
I trust that for many of my plants, the heat is unusual and welcome even if it does mean keeping a close eye on water.

C. edulis is drought tolerant. Nonetheless, this plant is causing the groundwater levels to drop in some of its native regions (e.g. Yemen). This is what the Yemeni Khat grower said in the video below: "Khat uses up a lot of water. You have to irrigate every week or 10 days, otherwise it does not grow"

Maybe it's also partly due to the way they cultivate the plant over there. You want the fresh new growth for chewing, so the plants are likely pruned (harvested) a lot and watered frequently to get succulent new growth.
Like I said a year ago, the plant is drought tolerant and mine survive a week or two without watering in full summer heat. But I do use a wood chips mulching layer, so that helps to keep evaporation from the soil down as well. But the new growth is fairly tough and wouldn't be very appropriate for chewing I think.

Is that just one plant with suckers? It looks half dead.
Do seedlings need a humidity dome? I removed the cover from my plant and within a day the seedling is limp so I put it back on. I read someone on this board saying khat seedlings don't need humidity dome at all, are they wrong, or do they go limp and than recover?

I didn't use a dome for my Khat seedlings. However, once they're used to high humidity, I think you should slowly bring them to ambient humidity by poking a couple of holes in the dome every day or a similar tactic.

The point was that i thought it was dead no leaves just a twig. I planted it in my garden last winter not expecting anything especially with the english winter weather and it came back to life and has been getting stronger and bigger.Quote:

Mine never had humidity domes and where all about 4 foot tall till i moved house and had no room or time for them they dried out and i binned 3 of them but kept this one just to see what would happen.

Yea, I think I messed up. My seedlings seem to be dead. I planted some more seeds in sphagnum moss. I read it is really good for seed starting. 3 out of 4 of them sprouted and I have good feeling about the 4th one. But the sphagnum moss is in a sealed container with humidity. When they all sprout I will make some holes on top of the container and see if that helps. these are my last seeds, so I can't have them die too.

Do it gradually the shock of too much air will likely kill them, as you say a few holes then increase over time. I just threw my seeds on top of coco coir moistened and left it with repeated spraying when it started to get too dry. My problem was Id bought seed many times and had no success, then i bought some from a brand name seed company and every one of them grew i had about 20 to start with all growing in 4 smallish pots. I had to kill off most of them.

My Khat seedlings grow very slow, is that normal?
I have a few indoors under a 450W dual spectrum CFL and 2 outside in the greenhouse. They seem to grow the same slow speed both indoors and in greenhouse outdoors. The greenhouse ones seem to have a bit of more reddish tone, maybe because of strong sun. I have been quite long since i sowed them, cant remember exact date but maybe a year ago and they are only like 20cm tall and thin stems, maybe 1mm or 1,5mm thick max. And they must have a support pin otherwise they fall. But they dont seem to be unhappy, just growing very slow. Is this normal or should i fertilize them a little to see if they speed up a bit? It´s the green variety i think.

That is strange, I heard the green grows faster than the red ones. Maybe you should prune it to encourage branching. I plan to grow mine like a bush.

Why wont you have it? Legal reasons? This plant will grow on a window ledge in england mate so im sure itll grow in any house and pretty much no one will guess its a banned plant. Seed of the gods are the best brand ive had every seed germinated.

Hmm i have no idea what variety I have but I think red or green for various plants can be a matter of conditions or at least partially. Light spectrum weird to the plant or too much light etc. Sure a variety may on average be a lot more green or red and in nature exactly where they are found it may be reliable and make sense... but just saying it doesnt seem like a reliable factor to me to try and differentiate them or it could become kinda meaningless once being cultivated, but idk.
My kratom varieties don't listen to their given color either. They're all like "I don't see color". Very non-conformist. But maybe they need to be a big ass tree first.
Anyway, I can grow my (only) khat plant in air that dries it out but as long as I water pretty regularly it's okay. This is particular to my apartment tho. And I do have very well-draining soil mix. I grew it from seed. No idea how to keep a cutting alive (maybe in vitro for me), my plant is pretty hard grown and not very juicy at all..
In my recollection it wasn't hard or special to grow the plant, just noted that it likes well draining soil and to be careful with too much / too long water present in soil.
Interesting plant altho i am generally over cathinones haha. The leaves are aromatic tho, I really wanna try cooking with them (bit like with bay leaf but will have to experiment)

That is a very nice (and huge) Khat plant/tree. Is that the narrow leaf type? My Chatha Edulis plant leafs are darker, more round and almost red. Must be a different variety than your plant or can it be the growing conditions?

Correct Mateo This one is the thin leaved (indigenous here in Southern Africa) I also have a thicker leaved variety but it doesn't turn red like others I've seen in pics Not 100%sure if the red colouring is variety or temperature related or both But either way my thicker and thin leaved varieties both stay green year round
