When to pull substrate from jars to case??
    #2395456 - 03/02/04 02:11 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I've had these jars colonizing for the last freaking month or so, and I'm wondering if I should/could case them now. Most of the jars look about 90-95% colonized, yet a couple look like they are lagging a bit. I think this is mainly due to the excess moisture within the jar.

Also, I tried to pack the jars loosely and it looks like one is colonized almost entirly, yet it looks like 1/4 of the jar has fallen apart. Meaning, instead of having a solid "cake" in the jar, it's missing a piece.

Like I said, these have been in my incubator for about a month now. The reasons it has taken so long is for one, I left tin foil over the holes and also because my incubator wasn't as hot as I thought. It was about 79F instead of 85F like it has been for the last week.

Is it totally necessary to fully colonize a jar in order to use it in a casing?? All I plan on doing is making 3 casings, using 2 jars each, by crumbling it up and casing with a coir/verm mix. What do you guys think??

If all fails, I just inoculated 4 pint jars on Sat. so they'll be on their way shortly. Thanks!!

I realize that...but with the excess moisture within these other jars, do you really think it will ever fully colonize??  Most of the jars are fully colonized in my opinion...the bottoms, sides, etc.  Ugh, this is nuts!!

if you must, pull it, scrape all the uncolonized substrate off, dunk it, and fruit it in a pmp.
you wont get any better yeilds from casing iko...

What I've been doing last week was exactly this: chuck
the 10 % of uncolonized jar, take the rest and cold shocked,
than crumbled in pieces and cased with straight verm.
Then replaiced in the incubator, and guess that in a couple
of day I'll place the casing in the terrarium

Good luck!

Ok...so I can just go ahead and take out the substrate from the jars, scrape off any uncolonized portion, case, then put back in the incubator until pinning?? I am going to case with coir/verm mix because of the success most have had with it...that won't matter right??

As I said previously, I think I need to take these out of the jars because most of the jars look completely white, yet there are places where excess moisture must have gotten around and stuck some of the verm against the walls of the jar. Furthermore, one of the jars was packed very loosely and it looks like a big chunk is missing out of the substrate while the rest is white.

I have six 1/2 pint jars which I plan on creating 3 small casings, and all are for myself anyhow. SO, I don't think it's a big deal to get tons and tons of shrooms because they could just go to waste if I can't consume them myself.

Oh, and I almost forgot, how are you handling these jars to avoid contamination?? If you follow the usual directions for casing, you are supposed to empty your jars into a clean ziplock bag. I don't see how I can scrape off any excess verm without touching the cake.

Would it be even better to wrap my clean hands in saran wrap??
