My comeback tale: Bulk grow after an 8 year hiatus [PICS along the way]
    #23962065 - 12/28/16 07:37 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hello again everyone. I posted a journal of my first grow back in 2008. It was a stealth grow as I was still just a kid living with my folks. I'm back, grown up, with my own place, and I am ready to get my feet wet again!

Going to be using more advanced techniques than I did in my first grow. Back then I was using the PF Tek and some basic trays without any bulk substrate. Nowadays I've decided to step it up to using a pressure cooker, bulk trays, and monotubs. Follow this journal, my journey...my comeback story and together we will see if I was able to improve from a young beginner to a more educated and successful grower. Happy to be back! Stay tuned

12/28 - First entry / knocked up

I went with rye berries this time around. Followed RR's tek for making rye quart jars. Knocked up 7 B+ jars and 7 Amazonians on 12/26. I'll be taking a week long trip and hope to return to some nice white growth. Pictures to come If all goes according to plan. Stay tuned

Good luck. I bet now that your a grown up, you'll have more success.

I'm also back after a 7 year break. I've grown successfully three different times in the past.
I think this time will be different. So far I'm in the same stage as you. I just knocked up 12
1/2 gallon jars with treasur coast. Now it's time to start pasturizing. Not looking forward to
Pasturizing enough substrate for 20 105 qt monos tubs. I do look forward to pressure cooking all that
Wbs. It's so much fun.

I look forward to seeing you progress.

01/04 - Fuzzy white, 6 against 8

They say a watched pot never boils. I'm many things, but I am not a patient man. I've checked every day since I got back from my trip. 3 days ago, only one B+ jar showed any sign of growth. Yesterday, 4 jars. Today, 6 jars. Not much growth. Little pellet sized fuzzy spots, but I'll take it. There are 8 jars left without any growth that I can visibly see. Hopefully another day or two and those numbers will be more favorable. 6 fuzzy jars vs 8 boring jars. Let's tip the scale the other way! Soon

Here's a picture of the most promising and advanced B+ jar. Slow and steady wins the race, at least when it comes to MS jars

More to come
Stay tuned

Hey welcome back!
Gunna tag along with you on this one and check out that journal!

I assume you're starting with spores to grains?
While you're waiting on those jars to colonize you should start looking into cleaning cultures on agar for future grows.
Getting started is actually really easy and will keep you busy while your jars are colonizing.
I like to have a lot on my, ahem mm,  "plate" so I never feel like I'm just waiting for things to happen in this hobby.

There are so many good write ups out there! These are just a few links you should check out while you're waiting :awesomenod:

Already bought the agar and just waiting for the petri dishes to arrive.  Plan on using this MS grow to agar to make a nice clean 2nd grow after this one goes well - fingers crossed

01/05 - I've tipped the scales

In my last update from last night, there were 6 jars with growth and 8 without any
MY HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED.  Tonight, we're looking at 9 with growth and only 3 without any.  No signs of contams.  Like I said, growth is slow so far.  But slow and steady will win this race

I'll let you guys know when they all show growth

More to come.
Stay tuned.

01/07 - All soldiers are preparing for battle

As promised, an update now that all jars are showing growth. I have 14 quart jars (7 B+ and 7 PF Classic aka Amazonian), all of which have at least a tiny spot of mycelium.

My two groups of soldiers are well on their way. In the picture below you'll see all of my B+ jars on the left and all of the PF Classics on the right:

They all have a long way to go before they're ready for battle, but I will update you as they get closer

Looks like they're lids for PF tek with siliconed holes and a center hole stuffed with poly
Looks fine to me as far as poly lids go

Yes sir! I always liked having four inoculation holes and I hate the idea of inoculating straight through poly so that's where the SHIP came in. It was my first try using them. Probably more work than needed with the four inoculation holes. Could have done one or two. But I have no regrets

You could have just skipped the SHIP's altogether and knocked those jars up in a SAB by just cracking the lids open and squirting some MS solution against the side of the glass

Thanks for the input. I've read that. Considered it. Wasn't totally comfortable with that option yet. I used an SAB with the SHIPs. Probably overkill. But I have no regrets. Every single jar is showing good growth with no signs of contams. It worked for me and I'm happy with the process. Maybe my next batch of jars I'll do something less time consuming. But for me this time around, it was almost therapeutic.

I'm loving the input, everybody!
Keep it coming

1/17 - shake n bake

So all of my B+ hit between 20-35% colonization. Decided to shake them all. Right before I shook them up this is what one of my most aggressive jars looked like

The Amazonians still need a bit more time before they're ready
I decided to ditch the SGFC plan of making bulk trays and go straight for monos. I have four 65quart bins. Pretty big. I think / hope all 7 B+ jars will be ready at about the same time so that I can use one of these tubs for a mono. Truth is, I'm thinking about keeping two of these big monos and returning the other two for some smaller ones (maybe half the size). I want to see if I like putting all of my eggs in one basket or if I like separating them. Risk vs reward is tough when you're planning out something that can contaminate. Feel free to chime in your own thoughts and experiences.

Anyway, I'm hoping my shaken spawn will be fully colonized by Sunday so that I can get the first mono going this weekend. Exciting times are ahead

More to come
Stay tuned

1/18 - Recovery

About 36 hours after shaking my 7 B+ jars:

Recovery is looking good. Plan is to pasteurize Saturday morning, cool all day, and get the mono going Saturday night hopefully somewhere around midnight or early Sunday morning. Substrate is going to be coir, verm, coffee grinds, and gypsum. Hopefully the jars will last until Saturday night or Sunday morning without reaching full colonization much before that. Can't imagine the difference of a day or so will make a difference, but let me know your thoughts!

As for my Amazonian jars, I'm planning on holding off shaking until Monday so that they're not ready to go before next weekend. I really don't want to pasteurize on a weeknight if I can avoid it

Anyway, lots of posts and pictures of the pasteurization and the start of the mono coming this weekend!

More to come
Stay tuned

nice labels

you can PC coco.

after 24-48hrs the grains should be recolonized enough to stick together while you move the jar around. unlike the free moving grains following shake.

1/22 - first monotub
So the plan changed...again. Not sure why, but after I shook my 7 B+ jars, only 4 were fully colonized this morning. So I went out and got a smaller bin, 30 quarts.

Yesterday I pasteurized, which it turns out is a more delicate process than I had previously thought. I shut the heat off at 140 degrees and it kept rising to 175 before finally going back down. I really hope I didn't ruin everything by messing that up. But I figured I'd take the chance and went for it. I ended up doing a 1:2 spawn ratio - 4 B+ spawn jars and 8 coir, Verm, coffee, gypsum substrate jars

I also think I placed the holes too low on the bin. Put them around 4 inches above the bottom of the bin thinking I'd have 3" of substrate below it. But it turns out I had almost 4. Live and learn. Final product:

So I have 2 questions. Anyone wanna help out:
1: is it a problem if the substrate / liner are too close to the bottom of the holes?
2: in the picture below, you'll see that I accidentally spilled some substrate between the liner and the tub. Is that a problem? Will that bite me in the ass if it contaminates?

Anyway, hopefully the rest of those jars will be ready in a couple days and I'll get a second tub going
Also, I'm FINALLY going to shake up all of the Amazonian jars later tonight so there should be at least two more tubs coming there.

More to come
Stay tuned

My liner and sub typically are at the holes. I haven't had issues except poly file working into fruits. The substrate outside liner should not  cause you problems. If it were straw or grain maybe. But with cvg it would be very unlikely. Looking good so far man.:vibin:

That sub looks a little bit on the deep side, it might take longer than usual to colonize completely. I'd definitely consider consolidating it for awhile before fruiting it

definitely a little deeper than I planned. I'm looking at about 3.5 to 3.75 inches I'd say. But I know 4 inches is a normal depth for many. But yeah, I had consolidation in the plan for a couple days after colonization. Thanks for the suggestion!

1/26 - little brother mono
Two days worth of updates. This entry is for two days ago, Wednesday night. I took the last 3 quarts of B+ and made a smaller mono. 27 quarts. 3:4 ratio of cvg- left out the coffee on this one

1/28 - little brother is growing up so fast
About 48 hours later, here's what the second b+ mono looks like:

And the new little mono stacked on top of his big brother:

And and update of the original b+ mono that was spawned on 1/22:

A few more days and this guy will be placed in to fruiting conditions

In other news, 4 of the quart jars of PF Classics (aka amazonian) are fully colonized. Refrigerated them until I get my tubs next week. Hopefully by then the last three jars will have finished as well and I'll have two more monos going for those guys. Obviously a lot of updates and pictures coming your way

1/30 - Fruiting conditions for the little tub

The little tub that had a 3:4 ratio hit 100% yesterday. Sent it into fruiting. Here's a picture:

The big tub still needs another day or two before it's at 100%
Amazonian quart jars are all almost done too so I'll be setting up some more tubs in a few days

2/4 - Big brother to fruiting and Amazonian monos

Big day today. I introduced the original larger B+ mono to fruiting along with the mini b+ that has already been in fruiting conditions for a few days. I also made two 33 quart monos for the Amazonia she which finally finished. All monos are from MS grains. Used a 1:2 spawn ratio for the two Amazonians of cvg. Here is what the current setup looks like (the grey bin is just for supplies):

Next batch of pictures will be pin porn (if all goes well, fingers crossed)
Next step for me will agar work to get some strong genetics for my next monotub project after this one is all spent

2/10 - Here come the pins

So the smallest monotub just started showing some pins a few days ago. 2 pins about 2 days ago. About 15 pins today with what looks like more to come. Here are today's pictures:

I'll keep you guys updated as this progresses
As for my original B+ tub, still no pins. But it looks like it'll be ready any day now. And my other two Amazonian tubs are well on their way to full colonization! Going to do some agar prep this weekend so it's ready for the first flush!

2/13 - Pin Porn and agar

Here are the updates on the pins from my mini mono:

And a closeup of my favorite cluster that I'll transfer to agar once matured:

And the agar plates I poured yesterday:

The big B+ mono STILL hasn't shown any fruits. Not sure if something went wrong. I'll update with pics over the next couple days if nothing progresses

And finally, the two Amazonian monos are pretty much fully colonized. But they were only spawned 9 days ago so I'm going to let them sit until 14 days and then I'll move them to fruiting

*If anyone has any feedback, i would love to hear it!*

More to come
Stay tuned

PIN PORN PIC UPDATE - My comeback tale: Bulk grow after an 8 year hiatus [PICS along the way] [Re: onethroughthree]

2/16 - First harvest

Just 3 days later, this is what the B+ mini tub (little brother) looked like:

I noticed some of the mushrooms were matured - veils broken.  However, many are still maturing. I think it's probably because this is an MS mono and the genetics vary so much from mushy to mushy.  Hopefully when I clone / isolate, I'll get more consistent timing in my flush. I decided to pick the ones that were ready and I'll finish picking the first flush when the rest are ready before dunking and initiating flush 2.  Here is today's wet harvest (all of which are currently drying in the dehydrator. I'll update with a dry weight tomorrow):

When I was done picking the ones that were ready, this is what was left in the tub:

So there's obviously still plenty more to pick in this flush.  I'll add up the wet weight of all harvests from this flush and the dry weight of all harvests and let you guys know what the total is when the first flush is TOTALLY spent.

Here are two of the biggest boomers from today's harvest:

***AND I HAD A GNARLY MUTANT (I posted about it in a separate thread because I felt like it needed it's own spotlight - i thought it was so cool)***

Finally, I took my first stab (no pun intended) at transferring my favorites to agar.  I beat this guy up pretty bad in the process and he bruised like a mother fucker. I'll let you know how my transfers go in the next few days:

And FINALLY, my B+ 33qt mono (big brother) started showing pins yesterday.  Very little guys, but lots of clusters that I'll hopefully get a chance to clone. As you can see, there's a lot in the works and I'll keep you guys updated

More to come
Stay tuned

2/20 - Final totals for B+ "Little Brother" and update on other tubs

So here are all of the totals for the first flush of my B+ mini monotub, nicknamed "Little Brother"

Recap on the details of this tub:
- 27 quart bin
- 3 quarts of MS B+ Spawn, rye berries
- 4 quarts of CVG substrate
- Spawned on 1/26
- Harvest of first flush occurred every day between 2/16 and 2/20

After MANY dehydrating sessions that looked like this:

HERE ARE THE TOTALS:
Wet - 594.4 grams
Dry - 57.75 grams

For an MS grow, I am very satisfied with these numbers.  I'm working on cloning / isolating as we speak, so hopefully when I start a new batch of monotubs, I'll be able to hit my goal of 1 dry oz per 1 quart of spawn. The pinset was more compact towards the center of the tub away from the lower polyfill holes - I dunked and we're waiting for the 2nd flush to start up

However, the pinset on my original MS B+ "Big Brother" 33 quart tub is VERY full - pics to come as they develop more.  There are clusters EVERYWHERE so I have a feeling that the weight per quart in Big Brother should be even more impressive than it was in Little Brother.  Not sure why this tub is doing so well, maybe genetics of the MS, maybe because I used coffee in the substrate

I also introduced my Amazonian tubs to fruiting on 2/17 - They are well on their way

Finally, I made my first transfers in my agar work - 3 dishes for a cluster that I found impressive, 3 dishes for a big fruit that I really liked, and I made 2 dishes from 2 different pins in clusters from Big Brother that looked promising.  Will be making more transfers until I have nice ropey rhizomorphic growth
