My comeback tale: Bulk grow after an 8 year hiatus [PICS along the way]

Hello again everyone. I posted a journal of my first grow back in 2008. It was a stealth grow as I was still just a kid living with my folks. I'm back, grown up, with my own place, and I am ready to get my feet wet again!
Going to be using more advanced techniques than I did in my first grow. Back then I was using the PF Tek and some basic trays without any bulk substrate. Nowadays I've decided to step it up to using a pressure cooker, bulk trays, and monotubs. Follow this journal, my journey...my comeback story and together we will see if I was able to improve from a young beginner to a more educated and successful grower. Happy to be back! Stay tuned

12/28 - First entry / knocked up
I went with rye berries this time around. Followed RR's tek for making rye quart jars. Knocked up 7 B+ jars and 7 Amazonians on 12/26. I'll be taking a week long trip and hope to return to some nice white growth. Pictures to come If all goes according to plan. Stay tuned

Good luck. I bet now that your a grown up, you'll have more success.
I'm also back after a 7 year break. I've grown successfully three different times in the past. I think this time will be different. So far I'm in the same stage as you. I just knocked up 12 1/2 gallon jars with treasur coast. Now it's time to start pasturizing. Not looking forward to Pasturizing enough substrate for 20 105 qt monos tubs. I do look forward to pressure cooking all that Wbs. It's so much fun.
I look forward to seeing you progress.

01/04 - Fuzzy white, 6 against 8
They say a watched pot never boils. I'm many things, but I am not a patient man. I've checked every day since I got back from my trip. 3 days ago, only one B+ jar showed any sign of growth. Yesterday, 4 jars. Today, 6 jars. Not much growth. Little pellet sized fuzzy spots, but I'll take it. There are 8 jars left without any growth that I can visibly see. Hopefully another day or two and those numbers will be more favorable. 6 fuzzy jars vs 8 boring jars. Let's tip the scale the other way! Soon
Here's a picture of the most promising and advanced B+ jar. Slow and steady wins the race, at least when it comes to MS jars
More to come Stay tuned Onethroughthree

Hey welcome back! Gunna tag along with you on this one and check out that journal!
I assume you're starting with spores to grains? While you're waiting on those jars to colonize you should start looking into cleaning cultures on agar for future grows. Getting started is actually really easy and will keep you busy while your jars are colonizing. I like to have a lot on my, ahem mm, "plate" so I never feel like I'm just waiting for things to happen in this hobby.
There are so many good write ups out there! These are just a few links you should check out while you're waiting

Already bought the agar and just waiting for the petri dishes to arrive. Plan on using this MS grow to agar to make a nice clean 2nd grow after this one goes well - fingers crossed

01/05 - I've tipped the scales
In my last update from last night, there were 6 jars with growth and 8 without any MY HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. Tonight, we're looking at 9 with growth and only 3 without any. No signs of contams. Like I said, growth is slow so far. But slow and steady will win this race
I'll let you guys know when they all show growth
More to come. Stay tuned.

01/07 - All soldiers are preparing for battle
As promised, an update now that all jars are showing growth. I have 14 quart jars (7 B+ and 7 PF Classic aka Amazonian), all of which have at least a tiny spot of mycelium.
My two groups of soldiers are well on their way. In the picture below you'll see all of my B+ jars on the left and all of the PF Classics on the right:

They all have a long way to go before they're ready for battle, but I will update you as they get closer

Looks like they're lids for PF tek with siliconed holes and a center hole stuffed with poly Looks fine to me as far as poly lids go

Yes sir! I always liked having four inoculation holes and I hate the idea of inoculating straight through poly so that's where the SHIP came in. It was my first try using them. Probably more work than needed with the four inoculation holes. Could have done one or two. But I have no regrets

You could have just skipped the SHIP's altogether and knocked those jars up in a SAB by just cracking the lids open and squirting some MS solution against the side of the glass

Thanks for the input. I've read that. Considered it. Wasn't totally comfortable with that option yet. I used an SAB with the SHIPs. Probably overkill. But I have no regrets. Every single jar is showing good growth with no signs of contams. It worked for me and I'm happy with the process. Maybe my next batch of jars I'll do something less time consuming. But for me this time around, it was almost therapeutic.
I'm loving the input, everybody! Keep it coming

1/17 - shake n bake
So all of my B+ hit between 20-35% colonization. Decided to shake them all. Right before I shook them up this is what one of my most aggressive jars looked like

The Amazonians still need a bit more time before they're ready I decided to ditch the SGFC plan of making bulk trays and go straight for monos. I have four 65quart bins. Pretty big. I think / hope all 7 B+ jars will be ready at about the same time so that I can use one of these tubs for a mono. Truth is, I'm thinking about keeping two of these big monos and returning the other two for some smaller ones (maybe half the size). I want to see if I like putting all of my eggs in one basket or if I like separating them. Risk vs reward is tough when you're planning out something that can contaminate. Feel free to chime in your own thoughts and experiences.
Anyway, I'm hoping my shaken spawn will be fully colonized by Sunday so that I can get the first mono going this weekend. Exciting times are ahead
More to come Stay tuned

 Sounds about right!
Mini monos are great too sounds like you got a good handle on things

1/18 - Recovery
About 36 hours after shaking my 7 B+ jars:

Recovery is looking good. Plan is to pasteurize Saturday morning, cool all day, and get the mono going Saturday night hopefully somewhere around midnight or early Sunday morning. Substrate is going to be coir, verm, coffee grinds, and gypsum. Hopefully the jars will last until Saturday night or Sunday morning without reaching full colonization much before that. Can't imagine the difference of a day or so will make a difference, but let me know your thoughts!
As for my Amazonian jars, I'm planning on holding off shaking until Monday so that they're not ready to go before next weekend. I really don't want to pasteurize on a weeknight if I can avoid it
Anyway, lots of posts and pictures of the pasteurization and the start of the mono coming this weekend!
More to come Stay tuned
