Being a sports fan is pretty fucking stupid 7

And this is coming from someone who has been a die hard sports fan for their entire life.
But seriously, the older I get, the more I realize how completely meaningless and ridiculous it actually is.
We (sports fans) let it affect us -- we let a loss from "our" team(s) hurt us. To the point where at best it depresses us, and at worst even cry because of it (I've never reached this point thankfully during my time as a fan, although I have on occasion wanted to break my remote control or even my television).

But for what? First off, it's a meaningless game. It's literally a game for fuck's sake. A game that has no bearing whatsoever on our actual lives. A meaningless game played by men who we have never met, and will never know. We take pride in teams that we have zero part in, outside of watching them and saying "yay" when they score, lol.
And fans who just happen to adopt teams to root for that are traditionally good, look down on other fans who root for lesser teams, as if we had anything to do with those teams being successful. We don't do shit but watch them and yet feel as if somehow we're a "part of the team". Lmao how stupid is that. And so many of us will automatically hate another person who's a fan of a rival team...even though we don't even know that person personally Not just that but you have countless examples each and every year where fans take it to the next level and literally fight opposing fans, in stadiums or sports bars or where the fuck ever -- just because they happen to root for different groups of multi-millionaire athletes
Seriously, what in the actual fuck.
When you really boil it down and truly think about it, and how many billions and billions of dollars worth of revenue annually are profited to team owners and players around the world because of fans of these games...it really and truly is one of the most mind boggling things ever.

I think maybe it is a way for straight men to be emotional and connect with each other without feeling like they are "gay" and "acting like women" when they express ANY kind of emotion. It is deeply psychological and strange to me. I despise football and anything that has to do with it. Look up Noam Chomsky's take on sports/football.

Hockey is life up north.
I find sports to be pretty pointless aswell but hey it's a nice distraction from reality.
Football is fucking bullshit IMO. I hate it.
Hockey players seem to be a bit more humble, they get paid less than other sports, still a lot though, and seem to genuinely care about there fans.
As far as the the psychological bullshit about gender roles and doing it because that's what "men" do, I don't believe that for one second. Tons of women like sports.

I am utterly confused when I see people cheering for a team.. I am further confused when I see people who seem to live for a trivial game with no point.

Wouldn't it be amazing if people were as passionate or fanatical about political issues or humanitarian causes, as they were about sports? I would like to see that for just one day, to live in an alternate reality where things were like that.

I don't know, man. Good question. I think a lot of people are born into it (or around it).
I know this one dude though, dude I grew up with who I used to be real good friends with (we're more acquaintances now) -- his entire identity & life is University of Alabama football. He never attended the university. Shit I don't think he's ever even lived in Alabama. But it's his entire life, man. It consumes him. And their football program has been utterly dominant in recent memory, so whenever they do lose (which is rare), the guy takes it as hard as if he lost a loved one. For real. And he looks down on fans of other teams as if they're completely inferior beings -- you can just see it in his face and by what he says that anybody else is basically a peasant in his eyes
Dude wanted to fight me once because I called him a bandwagon fan (meaning a fan who becomes a fan when the team is really good).
He revolves everything in his life around the games. Everything. He literally quit a job once because he would've had to work during the games. The top priority in his life by leaps and bounds are the games -- like I swear to God this guy would seriously consider skipping a family member's funeral if there was a big Alabama game on at the same time.
All over a game and a team that he has zero association with other than him waking up one day and declaring himself an Alabama football fan

I never understood the obsession with watching American football specifically either. I mean football has a break like every 6 seconds, it makes the game so boring... at least a game that plays consistently without so many breaks like basketball or hockey makes a lot more sense.
I sometimes enjoy watching UFC or MMA style sports though.

I agree.
Its funny when a guy roots for One team, like its the only team out there I mean, how does one become sooooo attached to one team?
I too have gotten into watch sports, but i never got into crying. Come on now, thats just too far.
But watching sports can be fun, but when your team loses bad, it does hurt pretty bad.
Its also funny Niffla that your avatar looks like a baseball logo, and i had a feeling u were a sports fan from that lol
i thinks some guys are just super competitive and sports is just that, competitive.

Yeah it is a baseball logo (of the Detroit Tigers, Major League Baseball), and I am a sports fan and have been so since a very young age. I'm just finally coming to the full realization of the sheer idiocracy of it all.
And my friends are all hardcore sports fans, too. Who sit around and argue about the shit every chance they get. Fuckers will even do sports trivia when we're out drinking and brag about who knows the most

I think I need a new hobby and new friends

I used to play as a kid and all the way up through high school. I'm in my 30's now and it feels like I'm too "old" to get back into playing as a full on hobby. Hiking or some shit like that seems more realistic at this stage of life.

Yeah I'm still a massive boxing fan, and to me that, and UFC/MMA obviously, are waaaayyyyy less of a "game" than a lot of these sports. In fact boxing or the UFC/MMA are not games at all.
They're more of a fight than they are a sport. Fights with rules, but fights nonetheless. And the stakes go beyond the final score of an organized team sport game. You can get seriously fucking hurt, or even die from that shit. Every year in boxing, at all levels of the sport, guys end up in comas and die after fights. I don't follow MMA but I'm assuming the same thing applies due to the brutal nature of it.
And in those sports you're rooting for a particular individual, not a team or a city. So it just feels a lot different to me.

I just mess around with friends so its easy, not joining any leagues and dealing with any real competitiveness
Cant risk breaking my hand boxing, so I wrestle Dont feel like running a marathon so I play soccer on very small sections of a field like 4ft by 4ft, or 20 by 20.
There was a funny moment where a friend and I were tripping, kicking a ball around our apartment and we had a manic fit of laughter over the scene. Bong in one hand, beer in the other, kicking the ball around nonstop, pretty funny moment.
I'll play hard when I feel like it, or waddle around passing a joint

Is it what's more 'realistic' or what's actually more important to our stage in development?
Fighters in an MMA ring, could be seen as two kids in a creche.
I see people who grow out of sports, developing spiritually, since I believe the sport teams are just physical counterparts of spiritual families and ultimately the need to belong to the source (which is also an authority - which people also crave).
As some people tend to mature spiritually there becomes an understanding that they belong to a big family by default which represents the whole human race and so, the closer they get to 'death' the more obvious and comforting this feeling actually becomes.
The mind no longer feeds upon the I am the best / I am a killer / fighter / I am a winner notion and instead basks in the fruits of what every productive soul is contributing to the same good cause.

I grew up a Detroit fan, so while the Lions are a horrific punchline I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy -- the city otherwise has delivered their fair share of titles since I've been alive.
The Pistons have won 3 NBA championships (89', 90', and 04'), the Red Wings have won 4 Stanley Cups (96', 97', 01' and 07'), and the Tigers won the World Series in 84'. I'm also a University of Michigan fan and have witnessed the football team win a national title in 97' and the basketball team win it all in 89'.
Now yeah granted it's been a long time since I've seen one. The most recent were the Wings in 07' and the Pistons in 04'. Of course it's funner when your teams are winning, but still.
Sports can be great, fun entertainment, but it's just that...entertainment. What I've come to learn (finally) is that it's no different than a television show. Or a movie. It's just entertainment and taking it anymore serious than that is a complete waste of time and emotion.

I get you. Sports are fucking retarded. I'm trying to spend way less time on it. I have no idea why I care so much about it. It's like religion or something. Don't ask why.

Never been too into watching sports. I'll watch finals and championship games occasionally. Not down to watch a team for a whole season or anything. Boxing and MMA matches if people are ranting about it coming up, otherwise I'm out of the loop and not keeping track.

I like taking LSD and going on bike rides for a few hours. It's a pretty awesome feeling. Running too. In the rain.

What they wont tell you is that sports perpetuates violence in a way the bigger faster guy picking on the weaker guy. No one gives a shit because they're men or whatever. If you go down to those games the players are always saying some real nasty shit to each other too. Most of our most popular players are cheaters or convicts. I'm not sure if this is so wide spread in other countries, but once most people get money and fame they become huge assholes and it trickles down to even high school.
That said the people that can't cut it in sports are usually 10x worse.... and they're the ones updating their status and wearing the jerseys acting like they'd go all out for it when in reality they're butthole surfers

I prefer watching tennis and pool billiards.

Hi, niffla. I got into NFL in the past couple years, but I don't think I fall into the category of "fucking stupid" that you're talking about. I never get emotional about a loss, it doesn't effect me at all. In fact, my fiancée & friends sometimes laugh at me because I commonly root for both teams (when it's not a redskins game- when it is, I only cheer them). I also hope the home team wins a lot, because I look at the stadium full of fans and think how great it would be if all those people were made happy. And I always hope all the players stay safe & have a good time. I don't get into all the stats & trivia, I just enjoy the action of the games. Idk, maybe I'm not what you'd consider a real sports fan, but I do love football Sundays any more.

Jesus fuck. What kind of life is that? That's horrible, I feel so bad for him.

Hey Burke, I think that's great, man. For real. More power to ya for being able to just enjoy it for what it is...entertainment. And not taking it too seriously.
Look there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying sports at all -- it's only when fans (such as myself for pretty much my whole life, really this whole thread is a subtle indictment on myself more than anything) take it too seriously. That's when it becomes "fucking stupid". Like I dwell on losses...lol. I mean how stupid is that. When the teams I root for lose, particularly what I perceive to be "big" games, I dwell on the shit. Like it depresses me. A game. A game that I have no control over. It's just some shit I watch on TV. On my fucking couch. It's really the most mind boggling shit ever when I really think about how much emotion I've completely wasted on being pissed off or just straight up fucking depressed because "my team" lost.
That's what I mean by stupid. It's so pointless and meaningless, and I know it, yet somewhere along the line I developed some sort of emotional attachment to this shit, and still allow myself to be affected by it. Shit is fucking weird.

I hate it when people say 'we' when they talk about a sport team. WE won last night ,we made it to the play offs.
Are you on the roster? No? Then shut the fuck up. You did nothing to help. I get franchises like the word we, but I when you brag about how we converted on more 3rd downs to win the game it's a bit stupid.
Sure buying team swag and tickets technically makes you part of the organization since your money directly funds new players, but that doesn't give you the right.
It's kind of like the new nfl clothing commercials. They have some nfl star talking about all the hard work they did to earn a jersey, then some grandma says she just bought the same one on nfl shop.
Fuck I dunno man.

It all boils down to entertainment. I love sports, football in particular more then most people. When your at the games you can have an effect of the outcome, well the crowd does. You can contribute to a teams win. People get into that. Plus it's like a huge party beer tailgating food. Some people get into spa operas others get into sports. There's nothing wrong with supporting a team. Sports have been around for ever and people have always been into it. I sometimes yel get upset angry about things that happen during the game but after the game I never let it spiral me into a depression.
It's an exciting game particularly when your team is playing. I know it seems like there's a lot of people on here that aren't into it and that's fine. But there are much much more people that are into some a sport one way or another. There's a lot more going on in sports then the actual game itself. I loved watching my college team overachieve this year and watch them climb the polls. Sports are here to stay. Looking down on someone for rooting for a sports team makes you look like a douche. If you don't like it don't watch simply as that. People grow up playing these sports and when they are no longer able to they root for the teams they like.
If you don't like sports better just get out of the way because millions of people love it, billions worldwide. You can have your opinion of people who follow sports but more often then not your usually looked down upon for not liking sports more so the people who look down on those for liking sports. Just the way it is, many sports games are more exciting then anything else on tv and it's not even close. Some games are boring but when you have so many media outlets covering a game or a certain sports or just sports in general it just goes to show you how popular it is.
Another thing and I know it's wrong and shouldn't think this was but for a lot of people if you don't like sports your viewed in a different way. Some of its neutral but a lot of its bad.
It's a great adrenaline rush watching your team at the stadium and rooting them on especially when crowd noise is causing a visiting team a lot of problems. And on the flip side the comradory at away games between your teams fans is outstanding especially when your team is winning or pulling an upset.
Sports it's here. It's huge. Deal with it because it's not going away.

Unfuckingbelievably and absofuckinglutely sickening! I'd rather watch a steamroller run over babies that watch a fucking god damned fucked up football game!

Thank you! I absolutely despise pro sports. I always have and I always will. Mr.Chomsky expressed exactly how I feel about them. He is my new mentor on this subject. I was always into music and art since I can remember. It is absolutely ludicrous how we put these mongrel/violent/asshole/criminal thugs on such a pedestal because they are superior physically, and then PAY them exorbitant amounts of money! Football is great but you're right, babies and a steamroller is a can't miss TV. That clip with Chomsky on the Jumbotron was groovie.

I have a "unique" perspective on this subject because I was an athlete who made it far enough to the point of getting paid to play my sport, and that Shit changed the way I look at the whole of athletics
I used to watch sports when I was younger because 1 I knew some of the athletes in my sport 2 I watched to study the game and to observe the mechanisms behind the play, the strategy and the philosophy that it takes to be a synchronised unit
People get upset at the military comparison but the camaraderie and such really resembles that situation
Moving forward, I don't watch my sport anymore since my career ended
There's more than a few reasons I don't watch anymore, but part of that is because of my situation, that I won't be making money playing the game, I realized I was never a "fan", or "fanatic" of the game, I was a student of the game
My studying of the game is over and so is the time I spend watching

I love music and literature and sports. Chomsky could say the same things about instrumental music that he does about sports. It's a distraction from more serious things. I don't want to think about geopolitics 24/7, however.

Have gotten to the point in life where I cheer for KC, but am not upset with their losses, playoff or otherwise. Fantasy football has helped me evolve to that mentality, due to starting guys that are playing them, etc... I have realized that my involvement has no impact whatsoever on their performance, short of bomb threats or something crazy that I would never resort to hehe.
It's more of a if they win that's awesome, if they lose that's cool too whatevs mentality.
Btw if I was this dude I would only be thinking about banging that chick next to him at all times. How my sports team did would have literally no effect on my life.

So are the athletes to blame for taking advAntage of the contracts that they sign?
Would you not sign those same contracts?
Sports is big business, that's why they get the cut that they "deserve" while entertaining those that pay to support that revenue

it's like the "players" are pitbulls/gladiators and it's a bloodsport to satisfy that lust. Also the gambling and money involved are just beyond any sense. Why not cap off the pay to say 5 mill? It's a disgusting cesspool of meaningless violence and nonsense. I despise it with every fiber of my being. How many players are MENSA members? How many do good things/philanthropy? How many go back to the neighborhoods they came from (if from an impoverished area) and try to build that up? If there are ANY that do these things it is not reported, nor do I care because it is minuscule compared to the fucktards that rule the "game". X infinity!

One of my favorite things about being an MMA fan, is that no one says "we". There's no, "we lost last night!"

Tons of athletes give back to their communities. But unless your following the sport, you probably wouldn't be in a place to receive the news about it.

So the news (which is pretty fucked to go by I admit) only reports all the bad things the players do? They NEVER report ANY good things? I would be willing to bet (and I'm not a gambling man) the the MAJORITY of EVERY SINGLE NFL player active right this second are bad fucking news. They would outweigh all the good ones by double! Betcha a dollar!

Lol don't let it piss you off, brotha. As the kids say these days...it is what it is.
Anyways just curious -- but how do you feel about actors & actresses? A level actors and actresses can pull in 25 to 50 million for a single film, and all they're doing is acting like someone else. We (society) put them on just as big of a pedestal.

But one could say the same for professional athletes, even though some may not appreciate what they do or the game they play. But still, just as some actors/actresses are among the most talented in the world at what they do -- the same goes for professional athletes

Yeah but theyre all over payed, no one should have more than maybe 5 million worth in assetts total
Not athletes, actors, musicians, politicians, etc There are people working just as hard in factories and on farms keeping civization running for 40k a year
Not that politicians work hard
Few of them do anything productive at all

Yeah there's no doubt that the amount of money these people get paid is utterly ridiculous and over the top, but thing is, the money that's made off professional sports (for example) is in the billions. The television money makes up the bulk of it, and then there's the gate money (the people who actually attend). And that's not even counting the money that's made off apparel sales (hats, shirts, jackets, jerseys, etc.).
Somebody's going to get that money.
And people pay to see the athletes. Just like people pay to see certain actors & actresses. They're going to command a lion's share just due to the crazy cash flow that's being made off what they do.
I'm in total agreement that what they do is no more meaningful in actual real life than other professions -- in fact it's way less meaningful than damn near just about everything, but entertainment, whether it's sports or movies or whatever, the masses pay to watch.
A doctor for example is infinitely more important to the world than a pro athlete or an actor -- but the masses don't pay to watch them perform. They do on the other hand come out in droves to watch athletes/actors/actresses perform.
Shit ain't fair but like I said earlier somebody's going to get that cash as long as the masses keep pouring in the money.

I dont think actors lack meaning in their work. As interesting as my life has been, I can only live my own story, artists open up a window into their lives for others. To me thats more valuable than anything, art is the only thing which seperates us from animals.
Animals eat, shit, fuck and die, only humans can stage the Götterdämmerung

I appreciate amazing feats of athleticism. Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, whatever... I just enjoy watching these people who are the best in the world at their sport using the skills they have spent their entire lives perfecting.
I have teams I root for. I cheer when they do well, and yell at the TV when they don't, but as soon as the game is over my life isn't changes by whether they won or lost. It's just good entertainment. Especially a close, and hard fought game. What else on TV is live and totally unscripted? Anything can happen.

Im a true OG patriots fan, but only started watching them post going 3/3 in the Super Bowl... Since then 18-1 loss (very emotional painful loss). another Super Bowl loss and only recently won the bowl. Prolly will win this year though...

I think what they're paid is appropriate. Anyone in the major spotlight doing their job should have enough money to afford a life where every average joe in the world can't get to them begging for autographs and what have you. Could you imagine if Peyton manning had to live among the general public, dude would never have a free quiet moment to himself again

Some athletes should be paid way more. Such as in MMA.
Those men and women deserve millions at the top levels of the sport. They routinely keep competing even after having bones broken.
Watching althletes do the flop is the most embarrassing thing to see.

yes, the people that dont want to see muscular men, padded up to look even bigger, wearing their tight little capri pants, reaching between the legs of other men to grab their balls are the ones that are gay. show us how they all slap each others asses if you could
Coming from a massive politic fan who would rather watch Fox news
I've never actually watched fox news, I dont read fox news, I suspect you're someone that believes that Bill O'Reilly is a newscaster and not simply a political commentator

I'm not much of a sports fan but I enjoy a good game from time to time. I'm not from a place that has a "home team" so I guess I can't really relate to people that are. It's often something that families enjoy together. That isn't bad.
It's like anything else, the people who get way too fanatical and hateful about rivalries or whatever are the stupid ones. There are plenty of sports fans that aren't stupid and shouldn't be made to feel that way about what they enjoy.
Blanket statements are pretty fucking stupid.

1. Something to talk about. 2. Something to do. 3. Something healthy to funnel emotions into. 4. Something to take pride in. Your home team doing good gives you a reason to brag about your city. 5. Most people played the sports they watch as a child, and/or young adult. They love it because it was a huge part of their lives at one time or another.

I have enjoyed college football/basketball, UFC/Boxing, cycling, olympics, car racing, and soccer from time to time, but I don't follow sports like some people do. Sports can be entertaining, but I wouldn't call myself a true sports fan.
I would rather play sports, than watch them.

Yeah you're right. Let me correct myself: Being a sports fan is not pretty fucking stupid. Not at all, so long as one takes it for what it is, and that's just entertainment.
Where it becomes stupid, IMO, is when someone takes it too seriously and allows it to affect them emotionally. And I'll be the first one to admit that I've been guilty of this forever. Non-sports fans will be dumbfounded as to how something like that can happen over what amounts to a game, but believe me, there are an endless number of sports fans who know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's silly, believe me I'm well aware, but it's very, very prevalent in the sports world.

I was a strength coach at the university and high school level so I think my take is interesting.
I dislike watching sports unless i have a dog in the fight. I coached boys that never had a barbell on their back to squat 300+ and loved watching them slam into unprepared players on the field, made my fucking day. At the college level it was the same shit only everyone at the d1 level is monstrous. Regardless, teaching them how to hit harder was a highlight of my career.
I can not just sit down and watch a football game, it's not entertaining. I would be up at 5:30 AM in the weight room with athletes training everything from jumping mechanics to how to toss human beings around. If I dont have a player I worked with to watch, I dont care.

http://detroitsportsnation.com/videos/ddrysdale/watch-cowboys-fan-fights-packers-fan-following-green-bay-victory/88913/
In the link above there's a video to a fight that went down yesterday after the Cowboys/Packers game (between a Cowboy fan & a Packer fan of course)
It's a game, people. It ain't that serious. You're fighting over dudes playing a game. A game. Dudes that these 2 drunken brawling fans will never, ever know personally. And they're fighting some other guy they've never seen before and will never see again, and basically because the other guy is wearing different colors than you, lol.

How did he deal with their recent loss?

I dislike this thing around team sports as well. Not so much for bench sports being a useless activity, we all need some form of entertainment. The problem I have with this phenomenon is the reinforcing and perpetuating of a us-vs-them mindset. When this is combined with strong emotions it can be detrimental, one could even argue that it works as a tool for the divide and conquer thing. I'd recall reading about some study that found females who watch soccer games actually get heightened levels of testosterone just by getting into following the game and rooting for a team.
I'm more of an individualist, don't watch sports that much, although I will probably look at a screen if someone is watching ufc/mma/boxing mainly because I'm into traditional martial arts. Wouldn't do any heavy contact sports with lots of blows to the head though, seen some injuries live and it doesn't look healthy, not to mention cumulative brain damage.

Well not only do some of these sports not pay taxes . I know in my city we are paying for one of the stadiums that was just built and needs fixing something like 114 million in taxes we pay for that bullshit ass stadium we could have done something actually useful with that so sports literraly hold us all back financially. Also a lot of people are well ignorant dumbasses I can try to talk about news or politics or social stuff and they don't know shit but they know what each team's pitchers are or almost every football player by name . but. When I say our state is broke and we are blowing money on stadiums or how in Russia domestic violence is legal now they say "that's someone else's problemi didn't do that.." When realy that's our problem that's a real problem and sports is a tv show damnit. So sports also hold us back mentally as well.

Money trumps all my friend. And sports is a billion dollar machine.
Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys owner) just put up a shiny new billion dollar stadium a few years ago (AT&T Stadium). At the time of completion it was the most expensive stadium on earth.

Pretty much all of it, like any new stadium, is paid for by taxpayers. But hey...football, tho.
They're also about to build another new billion dollar stadium right down the street for their baseball team (Texas Rangers). And get this...their current ballpark, was just built in 1994. So why are they building a new one already? Because their current stadium is "too hot" in the summers (the new one will have a retractable roof so it can remain closed on hot days)

This topic is two sided on one it's ridiculous how much they get paid and the money that gets "wagered" or spent on each game. For instance, my opinion is some of the refs get paid off. On the other hand these athletes risk their life's everytime they step foot on the field, basketball court, etc. Not that they are forced but they love the game.
