One of my reishi grows. Wasn't really impressed with this until it decided to conk. I let it go until it completely dried out. Nature's art.

Pleurotus ostreatus on unsterilized Pinus pinaster woodchips aged and dried by sun. The bad thing is the pines were treated against nematode, so I'm not going to eat them until I know which treatment was given to the pines and after being sure that it's safe to eat them.

I'm always afraid that everyone using HWFP is having the same problem. No way to know if the wood they use to fabricate the pellets is being treated with fongicides or chemicals.

Look for: Biodegradable. I find pet safe wood pellets better, but not the dirt cheap ones. If you cannot find wood fuel pellets, look for wood cat litter or animal bedding.
You can also use coir if it's cheap enough, it's about 5x richer in nitrogen than wood. It may need some modification though, coir is high in sodium and potassium.
There is also paper pellets (I prefer), and straw pellets (5-8x richer).
