Don´t toss that out yet, unless you are afraid of mold spores contaminating your space. It looks bad but you can expect shiitake to overcome it. How old is the block? How aggressive was it during incubation and how many flushes did you get from it? If it is first - second flush you can expect more mushrooms.

Outdoor experimental grow, soaked some freshly chipped hardwood mix in a jute coffee bag. I dropped 12 qts of old lions mane spawn and placed it in a semi-shaded location out back.

Interesting, don't think I've seen any large surface area king fruiting before, always slits on bags or bottles as in the commercial cultivation. Have you done it previously?

Nope, i made up a big ass monotub yesterday. I figured based on their growth pattern being vertical I would just do what I do with Cubes, but after it colonves in warm temps I move it to the 64°F closet.

On 4/2 I poured boiling water over wood pellets straight out of the bag and then inoculated them in open air as an experiment. They took quite a long time to colonize but last night I harvested 1 bag and the other I harvested just now. These were on the block for a little longer than I would’ve liked but both produced a fair number of fruits. I’m not 100% on the weight of the blocks but I think I may have used a 1/2qt of spawn per bag. I’ll need to look it up

Just found this from my og post

Steevo, the wood pellets and water are 71.5% water. You may consider cutting back on the water some. Colonization should improve.

My first black poplar fruits! Small cluster but meaty. This is off a test sized blocks (0.625 lb dry each bag)
The LM is a second flush from a bag of similar size.
Planning on making bigger bags for bigger fruits soon!

Wow all this reishi is making me happy
Nobler Hino- I need to grow out that culture you sent me. Keep us posted about the taste
fishermansjc- I’m planning on doing Black Poplar invitro like some companies have done with those plastic bottle grows. Narrow mouth quarts so the clusters are perfect little retail size. I found the fruits to be quite delicious but the stipes got tough when they were big. I dried and ground them into powder. I’m hoping that the entire cluster will come out a bit more tender
