A local forager was gonna send me a coral, anyone know if it can be cultivated or if it needs a living host?

This mushroom grows on decaying wood, very dead decaying wood. So I don't believe you need a host for cultivation. It is however not a mushroom you see cultivated a lot and it is very wood specific. I have attempted cloning with little success, but my attempts could have been done in a more sterile environment. I would say definitely give it a try and post your results.

Left pic is from an indoor fruiting chamber. The log is in the outside greenhouse.

I found something similar a couple years ago, I tried to find info on their edibility but there wasn't much info then. Also to identify individual species (if certain ones are more/less edible) I remember all the taxonomic keys required a microscope to compare spore lengths. You survived though so it's probably more like the usual some people could have a bad reaction or + alcohol = bad.

Thanks TravelAgency, these were cold shocked at 5°c for a week and then introduced to fruiting conditions 6-14°c in an outdoor greenhouse, they are on aged sawdust/oak drillings supplemented with wheat bran at 2.5% per substrate volume with a dash of gypsum. Primordia started to form after two weeks in an sgfc wrapped in black cloth similar to frost cloth, it breathes and lets limited light through, the containers are only half full with substrate so the top half of the container pools C02 to help elongate the stipe.
I will continue to experiment with this culture and try to improve the fruitings and may collect prints and see if I can isolate some better cultures.

Very nice! :taking notes: Missed out on winter this year around, they are my favorite edible though (I cook a lot of Korean food), got 2 6lbs grain spawn bags ready to go for next though.
When you say aged- did you ferment a là Vietnam and pine?
Only 2.5% bran? What's the reasoning behind that if you don't mind me asking- seems quite low but my experience with the species has been very limited and unsuccessful so far (tried SloppyJoseph's Big Gulp Tek, unsupplemented, cold shock at 36° F for a day (on some and 2 on others) then 67°F in a Martha for fruiting with the only fruits showing up in a jar in the fridge - I'm guessing it just wasn't consistently cold enough.
Once again its a pleasure to meet you, I don't roam the Cult much at all anymore (since before you registered) so its always nice to see a new mycologist on the boards. Welcome to the green team! I look forward to seeing all the knowledge and experience and expertise you have to offer the community!

My appologies.
Alright, so I fried it in some butter with some diced onions, and some cracked black pepper.
I threw them in the pan, sizzled them up, and the result was...
The shaggy outside was sizzled into a delightful crisp, the flesh on the other side was soft and delicate in flavor, which matched with the crisp of the "skin" or outside of the mushroom.
That, combined with a couple soft sauteed onions was almost heavenly. I want more.

Here’s how my first LM fruits are looking.
They have some areas that have less growth and some yellowing. I’m just noticing teeth beginning to hang down on them. They have spaced out a little more than I’m used to seeing in photos, but don’t appear very coral like
When do I harvest? Are they close? This was about 18 hours aho

I plan on starting a nice big attempt at Lion's Mane. What hardwood are you using?

20% HWFP with wheat bran
I’m making smaller bags, I am making 2 bags per 1.25 lb dry of HWFP and bran with ~7% gypsum. Then I spawn about 1/4’pint colonized grain per bag.
Not so bad for smaller bags I suppose? I plan on putting 1/2 pint colonized grain of bears head to 4 Bags with above recipe tomorrow (cutting my spawn ratio by half) so I am interested to see how those produce.
I’m thinking I will harvest tomorrow those fruits and then have one fresh and eat the other or dry to mix with turkey tail and reishi to try and sell to health food places

Fascinating.
That is kinda my plan here, I'm realizing how much I love doing this, and would really like to start selling it, while also having a supply for myself and friends.
The problem is space, I live with other people; and it's starting to make me re-think where I'm at. Sure is fun though. I'd love a temp-controlled shed full of racking for fruiting, haha.
$$$, and time.
Anyway, keep posting your updates! I'm interested for sure!
