Because it simulates the walls of the tub where water condenses and drips to the bottom, where the fruits often form.
Here's a pic of the setup:

But I guess my memory was wrong about the results. Some of the fruits grew up the sides of the tub, only one grew on the cube, and others grew in the middle of the substrate.
So in conclusion, that experiment told me absolutely nothing.

If it's the condensed water, you can try a lid from thin plastic with a weight, creating a downward cone in the middle. It needs to have a colder outside temperature to start condensing.
What would a useless casing do? Like sprinkling a thick bead of dry sand or something around the edge? Or using a shallow tray filled to the top inside a larger tub for freestanding antlers?

Do it again with a larger sample.

I think he meant with more tubs
But I doubt the cube will do anything - since it's the same temp as the rest of the substrate, it doesn't get condensation on it from the temp difference inside vs. outside the tub (which is what causes the condensation to form on the walls). So I don't think it will help much, and unfortunately don't have the time anymore to try more experiments

Looking good! Does lion's mane taste as good as they say? Does the taste depend much on your substrate?

best part of lions mane is the texture imo - it's kinda like cauliflower but a mushroom. got a nice bite to it

Marty, I love your grows man!
Thanks. I use oak hwfp, wheat bran, and gypsum. Spawned at 2.5% nothing out of the ordinary.
The flavor is good, more subtle than I expected. Probably the most subtle that I have eaten. I really like the texture, slightly chewy, stringy, yet yielding. I have only grown them on hwfp so I can't say if it affects flavor.

If you don't cook 'em enough though, the texture can be the WORST part IMO, chewy slimy grossness. I like to slice 'em into 1/4" thick patties and sear both sides pretty well. If you get it right, they're super delicious and the texture is awesome.
I don't think the substrate effects the taste, unless you put something really weird in it maybe it could?

I am going to be making tincture and try selling antlers too. I have a spot at the farmers market any time and will just see what does best and go from there, I still have about 35 bags to harvest plus the dried fruits from the first 40 or so bags I harvested in Jan. So I have options
