Any trusted identifiers in here? Last summer I collected what looked like oysters up here in Alaska. They were growing on dead aspen tree trunks / fallen branches. Definitely a rare find. According to some sources Alaska is too far north to be in standard oyster range ... in stead there is something similar... or at least in the family.
I think this is what I have: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurotus_populinus
I cloned it and it has fruited on agar but I'm going to do a run of it on aspen shavings and or a mix of aspen shavings and alder fuel pellets. It has a very intriguing almond smell and a whitish spore print with a hint of lavender color to it. Once I get it fruiting I'll show some pics...

Yea they do grow against the plastic but it isn't the bags fault. And yea, I leave them closed too

Strange, because mine really don't form any antlers, they just hug the plastic and form these flat fruits. I'm gonna try to pull the plastic away from the substrate when it's fully colonized. maybe that'll make a difference.

I still haven't figured out why they sometimes fruit along the sides of the bags, and sometimes in the middle of the substrate like you want them to (Reishi).
It happens with me whether it's bags or monotubs, and I've never changed much in my process.
My only theory is you gotta have a shitload of moisture where you want it to pin, ie; right in the middle of the substrate. When it pins on the sides, I think it's because that's where the moisture from the bag/tub had dripped down and landed.
But again, that's only a theory, not much else to offer from me
Sometimes I get the greatest pinsets where I want 'em, sometimes it all grows up the sides.

This could be tested by making a kind of crater in the substrate in a monotube. Sounds like an experiment to me

I never tried a crater, but I put a medium sized plastic cube partially buried right in the middle of the sub in a monotub as an experiment.
That time, they pinned all along the sides of the tub. None near the object. lol.

how would the cube influence the pinset? I can't really envision the setup.

Because it simulates the walls of the tub where water condenses and drips to the bottom, where the fruits often form.
Here's a pic of the setup:

But I guess my memory was wrong about the results. Some of the fruits grew up the sides of the tub, only one grew on the cube, and others grew in the middle of the substrate.
So in conclusion, that experiment told me absolutely nothing.
