It's highly efficient if your attacker is wearing platemail.

Maces are pretty effective in general, I think swords were popular because of their extreme speed (they average 2'lbs total and are perfectly aerodynamic giant razorblades) and the prestige of having one since they were very expensive.

Speed is an extremely important part of combat. Short swords and hand axes were largely preferred weapons before heavy mail was around. Well close combat weapons. Bows were brutally effective...

But yeah there's a reason great swords, halberds/great axes, maces, and heavy lances only became commonplace in the later middle ages.

Personally walk with a cane, so just went out and got a good one.

It's always on hand, security never tries to confiscate it anywhere, and there still exists martial arts that use a cane (study Tai Chi, but have to adapt some of the moves slightly, as it presumes a hooked cane, whereas my cane is more of a club).

Keys are good.  I took a piece of antler and carved a rattlesnake and put it on my key ring as 'decoration' but it was a perfect stabber.  Now I have a metal arrowhead from an arrow my uncle picked up in Africa on there.  I always have my keys in my hand walking in parking lots etc..  it's perfect for putting inbetween your middle and ring finger and punching with. (Think Wolverine).

Tools like screwdrivers Asante is going to put up his bum are perfect.  Work box cutters (sort of a knife, but different).  There's all kinds of shit you can float under the radar if you were ever to be frisked or get your car tossed.

If you learn how to use it, a Yawara stick is your perfect companion to upgrade a fist fight.

A yawara stick is basically a length of broomstick that protrudes an inch or so from the top and bottom of your fist. Not just does it ad more substance to your fist but the protruding ends can be used to scrape or hammer some sense into your opponent. It basically turns your upper arm into a hammer.

A sturdy metal marker pen can be used for the same purpose.

THE #1 weapon is a good pair of sturdy shoes or boots. Not just can you make a run for it but a sturdy boot is like a weapon that's always drawn. Kick someone in the knee and he won't come after you. Its not for nothing the preferred weapon of punks and skins. Your leg has longer reach, stronger muscle and is much harder to defend against than something you do with your arms.

When I was doing the okinawin thing we played around with yawara sticks (we basically played with everything, not just traditional okinawin things) and he always stressed pinching and hitting pressure points with them.  I never really took to it though.  Just a preferrence thing but they're good for getting around and locking onto someone's wrists..

They were always kind of hard for me to hold onto when it came to sparring around, and I'd end up just dropping it.

Depending on how big you make it that could be another one of those key ring things.  Make it some nice pretty colors etc.  Nobody would think much about it..

Agreed. You know the survival of the fittest system is broken when people walk and text and can walk into a black bear and still live another 40 years...

Asante: dress code for work drives me nuts. Mens dress shoes can both run and kick but womens is an either or. I've never seen heels I could run in (and not break my ankle) and I've never seen flats that aren't more likely to break your foot than hurt a shin.

I've taken to wearing combat boots on "inclimate weather dress" days to make a statement.

Clothes that are specifically designed for women rarely have a practical use in general.

Can't tell you how many times I've gotten a pair of pants or shirt to find out the pockets aren't real :mad2:

Have you made any videos on improvised weapons and self defence?
