I love the tone of a banjo.  Know what I mean?

I've been playing many instruments for many years now and my favorite natural (meaning no pedals or other alterations) sounding instruments are the banjo, mandolin, and steel guitar.  Not necessarily bluegrass; I just love the natural tones of these instruments.  Their tones speak to me so deeply without the need for words.

What are your favorite musical tones?

I have also always been drawn to the sound of a chorus in a large cathedral.  Again, nothing to do with any particual genre (i.e. traditional catholic music {after all, I don't even know what monks are actually saying; it's mostly latin anywho}); I just love the way 20 or so voices sound when they hold a single note with a harmony for several seconds in a room so big that the natural reverb makes your whole body vibrate.

I feel the same.

I'm exploring mandolin for the new year ahead.

Banjo is a hit too 'jangley' for me though I think!

if you're a banjo fan, and not just bluegrass as you say, i recommend checking out The Kruger Brothers.  they are master musicians, by definition, and in addition to performing (less so these days), they give workshops on banjo and guitar

and, while not solely or traditionally bluegrass, one can never go wrong with the boss himself, John Hartford

fiddle/cello are my favorite instruments, tone-wise and emotion-wise, and i've fallen in love with the harp the last couple years

Cool.  I love John Hartford.  Gentle on my mind is a masterpiece.  He has many many many great songs but that one is   .  He's got a great perspective on things and looks at the world through a different lens, so to speak.  His music always puts a smile on my face.

I'll check out the Kruger Brothers.  Thanks for the recommendation.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the harp!  I'm with you on that.  It's hard to beat a good Claude Debussy piece arranged for solo harp.  His solo piano works are perfect for harp.  It makes sense; I've always thought of his style as being very impressionistic, and I've always thought of the tone of a harp as being impressionistic.
