ethical question - prank gone wrong

My friend left their samsung phone at my house, so as a prank I kept failing the phone's login passcode so that it reverted back to factory settings with all data being erased. Hilarious right? Well unfortunately when my friend came back to the house and tried to log back into his phone, he could not remember the gmail account associated with the phone, cus he just made one up on the spot when he first got it. So now his phone is totally useless and he tells me that I need to buy him a brand new one and the cost will be $800!! A bit later I asked him about insurance but he said he already told the insurance company what hapenned and they told him that they don't cover that kind of thing. so wtf? do I just have to give my friend $800 ?

Possibly, yes.
That same thing happened to me with my gmail account because I also had to make one up on the spot and it fucking sucked when I couldn't get back into my phone. You did it so ya you should be willing to accept the consequences.

I stand by what I said.
Something of that importance you don't "make shit up on the spot" and if you do atleast right it the fuck down.
Your friend is a dumbass.

Wouldn't that be considered fraud?
I guess insurance fraud for a phone isn't that big of deal??

Thats what I told him and come to find out smashing it is covered but hes concerned about committing fraud, especially since he already told his insurance what really happened.

Yeah, I'd probably smash your phone into the ground if I were him and you weren't willing to pay for a new one.

Well when you buy it they force you make one up on spot and they for some reason just expect you to remember it. Not everyone has a pen and paper to write something down 24/7.

Lets not forget the real idiot here is that stupid security feature that turns your phone into a useless brick if you cant remember your initial email and password! and then the insurance company not covering it thing is dumb too! My friend told them that the phone was stolen and it was like that when he found it, but they were just like "ok tough luck. we cant replace it if its not lost or broken."

It's not fraud if the phone's really smashed.
If they ask how, you might have to get artistic like putting it on top of your car and driving down the road. Meet their criteria = new phone.
Lost? Throw it off a fuckin bridge man, lost.
(And then kick yourself in the taint for fucking with private personal property)

You know they already have you on record as trying to turn it in. If two days later it all of a sudden got lost or broken, that's pretty obvious. You fucked yourself with not reading the contract and meeting their criteria the first time.
Buy him a new phone, now. Take your medicine.

thats pretty fucking hilarious that the dude called the insurance company and actually gave them the truth.
the fact that you pushed him to that limit though is pretty fucking retarded. i would be pissed if i was that guy.
pay the man. or maybe he is trolling your right the fuck back, which would be fucking hilarious.

His friend might be a dumbass, but that doesn't change the fact OP was a shitty dick friend and has no idea what a prank is.
Yes you should pay your friend, or at the very least give him a sincere apology and say you had a retarded lapse in judgment in what you thought would be funny. Not even saying you're truly a dick OP because we all make mistakes, but this was unquestionably dickish.
