Potential Healthy/Contaminated Agar Plate?
    #23960437 - 12/27/16 12:30 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys,

Here is a plate I inoculated 13 days ago. GT variety. It's main growth is roughly an inch in diameter with a strange looking tight white clump at the 5 o clock area.

At first I was pretty sure both growths looked like healthy mycelium however now that the larger growth is more easily visible I have some concerns about it. I'm not sure if you can tell by looking at the picture but when I look at it with my own eyes it looks especially furry and is growing a little higher above the surface of the agar which the other plates don't seem to be doing. And I'm not quite sure what to make of the little tight white clump that is seen. I'm worried the main growth is mold and even if the tight clump is healthy it is far too close to the suspicious growth to be used for transfer to a new plate.

Please let me know what you think. Preferably looking for answers from a TC or high level experienced grower.

Cheers yeah

It looks good. Some spots tend to produce denser mycelium (your clump).

Look at 6 o'clock

If you want faster answers I recommend to not add something like this to your question

What type you inoculation? Multispore syringe? If so you will have to do some transfers. Time will tell if its mold and not very much of it.

Yeah inoculated with MS Syringe. I understand that I will have to do at least one transfer to be safe. However I do not understand why I would need to do more than one transfer if after the first there are 0 signs of contamination. On agar contaminates should be easily visible so why waste more agar and plates than necessary. Looks like so far the vendor who supplied the syringes do a very good job at keeping things sterile.

Dope am making new agar today waiting a week before transferring though as I have concerns of my left over agar plates no longer being sterile.

Its all up to you, if you want to isolate some idividual strains with the type of rizomorphic growth you replate.
If you are just doing a contam check I would let it grow out some more and take a wedge out of the periphery and leter buck on some grain.
Agar is fun stuff I would do both.

It looks good, and right for 13 days from spores.

But if you're after faster, rhizomorphic growth, less nutrients added to the recipe will do that.

As I haven't even fruited yet with this variety makes no sense to isolate as I dont know how each strain would pan out. I'll fruit then take a sample of a good looking specimen. Eat it to confirm decent potency and if so clone to agar and begin collecting master cultures.

Sounds like a good plan. Youve proved your syringe is clean so you could just nock up some jars.

doesn't really prove a syringe is clean, one drop could carry a contaminant the next drop may not. this is why if you make ten plates from a syringe a few of them might grow some colonies and others may not. depends on how bad. most syringes are not going to be 100% by nature

it's a better test of a LC, since a contaminant in a LC will grow through the whole LC. Spore syringes are supposed to be made with distilled water so contamination won't necessarily be in every drop(homogeneous)
