Orange patches on mycelium, PF Jar
    #23958649 - 12/26/16 03:56 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hi All!

I recently took the plunge and started growing my own mushrooms after reading about it for months. I lurked in the background and learned a lot from shroomery

This is my very first grow and I've run into a conundrum, varying sizes of orange patches have started growing in all of my jars, 8 in total.

The jars are filled with brown rice flour and vermiculite and I injected them with a spore syringe that I bought from spores101.com, specifically it is called "Alcabenzi". I've read bad reviews but that's after the fact.

I pressure cooked the jars before inoculation, 90 minutes @ 15 psi and left the jars in the cooker until I was ready to inoculate.

Inoculation was done in a HEPA vented inoculation chamber that I made, and for the first 4 jars, I used alcohol like a maniac and had to tell myself that I was being overly-excessive.. almost knocked myself out by the fumes the chamber was spewing out lol. Second 4 jar batch, I used a lot less alcohol. The needle was flame sterilized every time it entered a new jar, I gave time for the needle to cool before inoculating. Temperature fluctuates by several degrees from time to time but I try to keep it at a steady 27 Celsius / ~80 Fahrenheit.

I've been searching through other threads on shroomery as well as other Mycology websites and have only found two cases that resemble mine (but not completely). In both cases, the orange didn't pronounce itself in huge patches like in my jars and eventually disappeared when the jars were almost 100% colonized. Right now, I am 3 weeks in I and would say they're at 60-75% colonized.

The orange seems to only present itself where I inoculated with the needle, it does not seem to be spreading and the mycelium is still going strong in all of the jars except for one slowpoke which is way behind all of the others. The discoloration shows up after the mycelium has been growing well for a few days.

I have been manipulating the jars waaayyyy too much like a noob and I realize this but I have the beginners touchy-touchy jitters.

Thanks for reading, I have attached some pictures of a few jars. All of the jars are affected with the orange mycelium.
