Time for straw to dry
    #2395840 - 03/02/04 05:43 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

After pasteurizing and wringing out a pillowcase of wheat straw, is the amount of time necessary for it to dry as long as dung. Doesn't seem like it is near as wet as dung. Anybody???

i've had no problems with spawning out straw as soon as it's cool. i've spawned straw less than an hour after pasteurizing and it's been fine.

Same here, half to one hour draining is all i normally do.
You want a fair bit of moisture in the straw still.

Wow, thanks for the quick response. Ok, here's another question. How tight does the straw need to be packed down?? The amount i put in the pillow case was enough to fill 2 containers dry and semi packed down, but now that it's wet, I can crunch it down to the size of a baseball!! Are you supposed to pack down as MUCH straw as you can fit into the container?? thanks for the help guys!!

4 or 5 inches deep, and packed in pretty tight is what my foaf has always done, add on top of that 3/4-1" of casing you have at most 6" of material in your setup. You want it kinda tight so the shrooms have something to hold on to. If its kinda loose, then you're probably only gonna get little guys (or so my foaf tells my friend...)

5" deep is good... I go with a thicker casing, as straw dries out quickly, and I like to get more than a single flush. I generally case at 1 or 1 1/4 inches.

I compress the straw as much as my body weight pressing down on it from above will allow me to (I'm 210lbs). The casing should not be compressed at all.

The compression will speed the colonization SO much. I colonized 5" compressed straw in a 115gallon rubbermaid container in about 5 days using 2L of spawn. I've seen other people's (who didn't compress) take upwards of 12 days.
