Social media. Good or bad for society?

Facebook, Twitter, this website and all the forms of online social media
Catastrophic waste of time or absolute genius?
It has allowed a new way of doing communicating, doing business share important but it has also become a cheap source of constant distraction, an attention span killer and a platform for fake news to arise.
Good only in moderation? Like a drug perhaps? Then again some people are paid an actual yearly salary to monitor it full time.
Whose to say.
What's your take on this?

Terrible. The casual narcissism Facebook enables is pretty gross. The spying and echo chamber / bubble. The exposure to advertisement, + corporate-advert narrative that your life seems to become enmeshed with. Targeted ads suck and are creepy, especially since they are coming up with more invasive and clever way of bringing those ads to you.
It's honestly very anti-freedom as well. Good americans (if you are american) should make personal stands against it and delete their accounts as it goes against all of those cherished tenets we claim to believe in.
It just feels like you're a sellout using it. It didn't use to feel that way, when you had a freedom of choice to which social media site you wanted to use , now FB has too much power and is a media monopoly that is constantly testing the waters and eroding your ideas of what privacy and freedom should be.
Also it isn't safe if you are at all involved with radical or unusual politics or take drugs/talk drugs, etc. It's just dumb.
Aside from all of that stuff, the fake news, the constant diary of petty thoughts and weak thoughts that infiltrate your feed, the meme-talk. I'm leaving out a bunch or the sake of saving time. Because there is tons of layers to this shit.
For example once you get a whiff of how good it feels to get tons of likes on a thought that came from your own head, you will inevitably start editing how you speak and talk naturally (subconsciously or not) to receive more likes + polish your ego + appear first on other people's feeds.
Tons of shit feels like the interactions are engineered, with the like alert that somebody else already read your message but if they don't want to respond it makes them look like a bad person. It's like a guiding hand and it's totally fucking bad for people.
What else, zuckerberg has himself admitted to abusing his powers and calling people on his site dumb fucks. It's a breeding ground for sociopathy.
I guess some people can have fun, take it lightly. but fun to me involves not feeling like a corporate sell out, eh you can make argument in favor or against anything but my own life has improved since I got off. Less stressful, more natural, less pressure overall.
Watching other people's minor thoughts and stuff regularly, and it's not like there isn't cool things people post, but that means to get to them you do have to sift through mounds of garbage before you come across it. As long as you have more than a hundred friends on there, guaranteed you will be exposed to something dumb almost more often than not.
But really the worst thing about it is the narcissism. Or the big brother dystopia feel it has. Who the fuck wants to spy on each other ( not to say the least, do the whole legwork for them our very own selves) for some unknown profiteer or government agency? It's pretty shameful haha. Facebook used to be cool with letting you edit your name, now they want your govt. id and telephone number to make an account. They beg too much and HATE to see you go lmfao
Forums like these are much better, more variance in opinion, more interesting, anonymity and more free to actually say what's on your mind. But most of my real life friends aren't on these forums so this is just a fun way to interact with other people. IRL if I see someone that means I really wanted to see them. Not sure if it's a two way road, maybe FB desensitizes people to what IRL interaction should be, since they are socially turned on all of the time.

It's opened people up to the reality of butt hurt and the potential of people. With computers and Internet, everything is being exposed. Surely there will be bumps but also great minds and changes. It's like talk therapy fobcollective consciousness. We have a lot of issues and hope to survive to evolve. People tend to be called out and addressed, anybody. Now everyone can say whatever they want with or without publication. Governments and individuals are more exposed to opinions of others. I think the sensitivity of ourselves to opinion can only evolve a more delicate and greater mind.

Ya you should all be ashamed of yourselves for your self-centered facebook updates.

I love and absolutely detest social media. I've been pretty "free-spirited" in the last 10 years or so, so it's really nice that facebook has been able to keep my line of communication open with everyone I've met and has kept all the digital memories I've uploaded. I love that even though I've lost every-thing over and over, that facebook still has my pictures over the years. Cheers, facebook, you necessary devil you!

Overall I think it's pretty good except for one horrific thing they managed to do. Form groups.
Back in the day you only had one or two fuck nut per town and they hung with the other two fuck nut from the neighboring town and went to the bar. Now with Facebook, all the fuck nuts can now be united in one group. Then when they realize they have sufficient numbers to actually make shit happen, they start doing it. They know each other now. They realize that 2 of them per town multiplied by 100000 towns can have influence. Not only that, they can start converting the other potential fuck nuts to their case instated of never having any effect on the guy and let him have a productive life due to non-exposure.
Al-Quaida, ISIS. These are the results of social media. Especially when you have hicktown redneck shoot up a bar that never had actual contact with the group other than via social media.
Upside of that coin. The 2 geniuses per town can now start forming genius groups. Gererally pushing the limits of technology and benefitting the world.

they aren't inherently good or bad. it's the degree to which people are absorbed in them, and the resulting self-absorption and ignoring of in-person interaction(s) that i find bad.

Overall, mostly bad.
But, some good things have come out of social media. Like the Dakota access pipeline protests... the reason they were able to orchestrate and succeed was because they successfully organized and crowdfunded a protest via Facebook. That's a good example of people using social media for the common good.

Overall, I'd say bad. I take a break from Facebook for about a month every so often. I feel happier when I'm off social media. But it's addictive and I find myself getting drawn back in. Ugh

Do many people really think that? l cant think of anyone I would consider to be groundbreaking in the way people look at someone like Thomas Edison, none of these things matter to me, what matters has been since before anyone knows, but there are people I hold in high regard.
Striving to be unique is a wasted endeavor.

Posting on social media = willfully submitting aspects of your life to the police state which is data mined and scrutinized in real time or later on down the road in the future.
It also breeds narcissism and 'group think mentality' as well as giving away free speech (in the case of Facebook and Twitter, they actively skew their 'news' to be in favor of the establishment's press and delete and ban users which spread messages which challenge their agenda). It could be argued that doing so is a form of implementing propaganda and brainwashing people.
Unfortunately, voluntarily offering up, among other things, your personal information as well as your face (facial recognition), where you check in and out of, your mac and IP addresses, who you associate with and your interests, has become socially acceptable. Just hand over your information for entertainment. All of this information is being added to a database for Data Science & Predictive analytics. Very soon, if not already, they will know everything about your personality, interests, political affiliations, who you associate with, and have at a minimum, your facial recognition, scans of your irises, fingerprints, etc. so that you can be picked out of a crowd, from among other technologies, your face, the devices you carry, and the technology is here to predict your future thoughts or actions based on all the personal information you have volunteered to social media and your internet searches. Hell, simply using Siri or similar apps steals your voiceprint, links it to your identity, and the app hands it over or sells it to whoever they want.
Social media is bad.
So the government can't do anything right but are going to be able to predict my thoughts? Information is all going a database no one will ever look at. The worst that is going to happen with all this info is you will get better targeted advertisements in your sidebar. Been hearing about how "they" are building a database since the dawn of the internet, yet nothing ever happens. Every nation on earth has NSA like spy agencies keeping info, but nothing ever happens with it. So what if they know who i called? It will never effect my life in any way. It's like saying all the security cameras are big brother, no one watches that footage. I have 4 cameras running around the perimeter here and have actually looked at the footage twice in 5 years. But how many times have I heard hysteria these cams were going to take everyone's freedom away? Catch criminals is what they do. The NSA database is for catching catching threats to national security. While you should care what info they have and how they use it, I havent seen any proof they use it for anything other than trying to catch terrorists.
I was watching the X Files the other night and I realized that is where many attitudes like yours started. Like the G men show up and erase all evidence and have it all under perfect control and they handle it all perfectly. They have conspiracies behind the conspiracies and predicted everything. What really happens, in the real world, is the government/police fuck everything up. If they really had all these capabilities there should be no terrorist plots they weren't aware of. Instead they pretty much know nothing. Scans of my fingerprints lol. Storing my voice print? I am not so full of myself that I believe anyone cares enough about me to store my info.
All the people talking on facebook drug groups have nothing to worry about, why would they? The spy agencies can't even track Jihadists who are openly using Twitter, but I should worry because I posted a Trump meme? Posts like yours empower the government, you are encouraging everyone to be afraid and hide. They should take to the internet and fight for justice. We outnumber them, they work for us, they are not our masters. I love posting about my drug crimes online, I refuse to be afraid. The fact there are 10 million of us posting pictures online of our illegal drug use, and nothing ever happens, should be a clue that big brother is in no position to do anything. They would be totally overwhelmed with all the info.
A big database of everyone I "know" gets more retarded every year I am on Facebook as I add people I know even less. Having access to my 500 friends will provide big brother will the useless information I talk to a lot of people into the same shit I am. If anything social media is increasing freedom. Pot legalization would never have got this far without it. The drug war mentality is being eroded daily. Cops shoot a person and there is a protest that night. Bad judges are getting removed because of public pressure. People are fighting back against a bullshit slanted media. You have never had a platform like this to make your voice heard, and instead of shouting you want freedoms, you are hiding. So you honestly suggest the solution is delete all your accounts and hide? And really at the end of the day I hope the guy who searched how to make a bomb on google does get a knock on his door, some search terms should set off alarm bells somewhere. If you killed your wife your search of how to get rid of a body should be used against you, right after it's subpoenaed legally in a court of a law. Even with my IP the only way the cops can find out who I am is by going to court. They don't have some magic button that tells them who is behind every IP. If your FB is set up with a fake name and no picture, they pretty much have nothing on you. Same with my google searches, that info is stored, but it's just a IP # it's not your name unless you used real name in Google+. Scan of my fingerprints, GTFO with that.

If policy/law changes happen or corrupt fucked up people get into office/in charge of certain countries...then the data that is stored could start fucking peoples lives over.
Gays, Drug users, etc....and yeah it's probably unlikely, but why allow it in the first place?
It is fucked up to know that they are logging all that info on every single person, permanently.

It all depends on how you use it and if you keep it all in perspective. I don't think that social media is inherently good or bad, but people can use it either way.
The other concern is the people who run the social media sites. What is their intention and motivation? Like the Twitter guy is a real ass hat.

There are obvious good points. I don't think we have adapted to this new media. It feels as though it was like this a long time, but we didn't even have smart phones in my high school. The iPod touch was amazing. Internet on a mobile device.
Really, I think it's just too much information for most people to handle all the time. It's stressful and addictive and causes drama

Because betas don't have to be betas if they can overcome their demons. It's equal opportunity.

"Social Media is a medium that connects many communities through online technology. Social Media acts beneficial for all communities if you do proper and right use of it. But it can affect you badly too, if you use it in the wrong way then it is a destroyer for you. In simple, Social Media affects Society in both negative and positive ways."

Smartphones and Facebook have torn the fabric of society to shreds.

Pretty good.
Easy way to be in contact with friends.
I don't actually use social media because I'm pretty much a loner but if I was to use it, I would use it the same way people use LinkedIn.
I've read that employers check Facebook, courts check social media to use certain posts as proof of anti social behaviour. I would just spend my time painting a perfect picture of myself so that people who viewed it would see a good character. I would post myself volunteering, hanging out with friends. Just use it as a character reference tool.
I've been meaning to build up social media for this reason but I have like 5 friends on Facebook. The first thing to do is go to lots of social events to find more friends for Facebook I guess.
I was in a course I didn't fit in with the other students and then in a really toxic workplace so I literally have no one on my Facebook apart from old housemates.
Most the people I have been spending time with are mental health workers for my issues who obviously it wouldn't be appropriate if I sent them a friend request.

Steve Jobs didn't even let his own child use an iPad.

That's because he was more of the opinion that children should be working by that age.

Steve Jobs was insane and a tyrant.
I hope Facebook would die off like Myspace but I think its here to stay unfortunately.
Everyone is making a big deal abt them being down for 6 hrs or whatever, pfft....

I dont think its as bad as they make it out to ne, just that whats being talked abt is selling for thrm, like being for it a few years ago. Just the story has changed.
Teen girls jave always hated their bodies/compared them to other girls, social media just gave all the complainers something to point at.
