Social media. Good or bad for society?
    #23958181 - 12/26/16 12:02 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Facebook, Twitter, this website and all the forms of online social media

Catastrophic waste of time or absolute genius?

It has allowed a new way of doing communicating, doing business share important but it has also become a cheap source of constant distraction, an attention span killer and a platform for fake news to arise.

Good only in moderation? Like a drug perhaps? Then again some people are paid an actual yearly salary to monitor it full time.

Whose to say.

What's your take on this?

Terrible. The casual narcissism Facebook enables is pretty gross. The spying and echo chamber / bubble. The exposure to advertisement, + corporate-advert narrative that your life seems to become enmeshed with. Targeted ads suck and are creepy, especially since they are coming up with more invasive and clever way of bringing those ads to you.

It's honestly very anti-freedom as well. Good americans (if you are american) should make personal stands against it and delete their accounts as it goes against all of those cherished tenets we claim to believe in.

It just feels like you're a sellout using it. It didn't use to feel that way, when you had a freedom of choice to which social media site you wanted to use , now FB has too much power and is a media monopoly that is constantly testing the waters and eroding your ideas of what privacy and freedom should be.

Also it isn't safe if you are at all involved with radical or unusual politics or take drugs/talk drugs, etc. It's just dumb.

Aside from all of that stuff, the fake news, the constant diary of petty thoughts and weak thoughts that infiltrate your feed, the meme-talk. I'm leaving out a bunch or the sake of saving time. Because there is tons of layers to this shit.

For example once you get a whiff of how good it feels to get tons of likes on a thought that came from your own head, you will inevitably start editing how you speak and talk naturally (subconsciously or not) to receive more likes + polish your ego + appear first on other people's feeds.

Tons of shit feels like the interactions are engineered, with the like alert that somebody else already read your message but if they don't want to respond it makes them look like a bad person. It's like a guiding hand and it's totally fucking bad for people.

What else, zuckerberg has himself admitted to abusing his powers and calling people on his site dumb fucks. It's a breeding ground for sociopathy.

I guess some people can have fun, take it lightly. but fun to me involves not feeling like a corporate sell out, eh you can make argument in favor or against anything but my own life has improved since I got off. Less stressful, more natural, less pressure overall.

Watching other people's minor thoughts and stuff regularly, and it's not like there isn't cool things people post, but that means to get to them you do have to sift through mounds of garbage before you come across it. As long as you have more than a hundred friends on there, guaranteed you will be exposed to something dumb almost more often than not.

But really the worst thing about it is the narcissism. Or the big brother dystopia feel it has. Who the fuck wants to spy on each other ( not to say the least, do the whole legwork for them our very own selves) for some unknown profiteer or government agency? It's pretty shameful haha. Facebook used to be cool with letting you edit your name, now they want your govt. id and telephone number to make an account. They beg too much and HATE to see you go lmfao

Forums like these are much better, more variance in opinion, more interesting, anonymity and more free to actually say what's on your mind. But most of my real life friends aren't on these forums so this is just a fun way to interact with other people. IRL if I see someone that means I really wanted to see them. Not sure if it's a two way road, maybe FB desensitizes people to what IRL interaction should be, since they are socially turned on all of the time.

It's opened people up to the reality of butt hurt and the potential of people.  With computers and Internet, everything is being exposed.  Surely there will be bumps but also great minds and changes.  It's like talk therapy fobcollective consciousness.  We have a lot of issues and hope to survive to evolve.  People tend to be called out and addressed, anybody.  Now everyone can say whatever they want with or without publication.  Governments and individuals are more exposed to opinions of others.  I think the sensitivity of ourselves to opinion can only evolve a more delicate and greater mind.

Ya you should all be ashamed of yourselves for your self-centered facebook updates.

:trololol:

I love and absolutely detest social media. I've been pretty "free-spirited" in the last 10 years or so, so it's really nice that facebook has been able to keep my line of communication open with everyone I've met and has kept all the digital memories I've uploaded. I love that even though I've lost every-thing over and over, that facebook still has my pictures over the years. Cheers, facebook, you necessary devil you!

Overall I think it's pretty good except for one horrific thing they managed to do. Form groups.

Back in the day you only had one or two fuck nut per town and they hung with the other two fuck nut from the neighboring town and went to the bar. Now with Facebook, all the fuck nuts can now be united in one group. Then when they realize they have sufficient numbers to actually make shit happen, they start doing it. They know each other now. They realize that 2 of them per town multiplied by 100000 towns can have influence. Not only that, they can start converting the other potential fuck nuts to their case instated of never having any effect on the guy and let him have a productive life due to non-exposure.

Al-Quaida, ISIS. These are the results of social media. Especially when you have hicktown redneck shoot up a bar that never had actual contact with the group other than via social media.

Upside of that coin. The 2 geniuses per town can now start forming genius groups. Gererally pushing the limits of technology and benefitting the world.

they aren't inherently good or bad.  it's the degree to which people are absorbed in them, and the resulting self-absorption and ignoring of in-person interaction(s) that i find bad.

I watched a documentary the other day that claimed FB makes around 14 bucks a year on average per user with all of their data mining and targeted advertising..

Alright, since some of you will stumble on it.... It's part of the results, not entirely. It should be obvious but you're all gonna point it out. So there you go.

Overall, mostly bad.

But, some good things have come out of social media. Like the Dakota access pipeline protests... the reason they were able to orchestrate and succeed was because they successfully organized and crowdfunded a protest via Facebook. That's a good example of people using social media for the common good.

Overall, I'd say bad. I take a break from Facebook for about a month every so often. I feel happier when I'm off social media. But it's addictive and I find myself getting drawn back in. Ugh

I use no social media besides fourms.  Everyone thinks what they do is so important, groundbreaking, or unique but in reality an overwhelming majority is not.

Do many people really think that? l cant think of anyone I would consider to be groundbreaking in the way people look at someone like Thomas Edison, none of these things matter to me, what matters has been since before anyone knows, but there are people I hold in high regard.

Striving to be unique is a wasted endeavor.
