matching an amplifier to speakers
    #23957496 - 12/25/16 11:27 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I've been reading some articles about how to select an amplifier for your speakers and it seems that as long as the ohms match between the amp and your speakers and you get an amplifier about 10% more powerful than peak output from the speakers, you should be good.  Is there anything more to it?  The articles suggest that this is a complex analysis but that doesn't seem complex.

Pretty much its really not terribly difficult. Ohms can get confusing sometimes to new people.  Setting your gains properly on your amp is more important then anything.  What are speakers and amp for anyways? Also I would suggest reading a lot of reviews there is a bunch of crap out there.

Yea.  I have read that even seemingly static resistance will float sometimes depending on what is being played into the low ohms or into the teens.  Is it wise to buy an amp that can handle this?  Does it matter?

Honesty, if you are buying a solid state amplifier, it's unlikely much of this is going to matter with modern day hifi equipment.  With tube amps, the matching becomes a bit more tedious however it's usually matching the impedance with source components that is important.  Most of the speakers on the market, regardless of price are going to be 8ohm these days.  The only common set of hifi speakers that I can think of that are often 4 or 6ohm are electromagnectic speakers like the Magnapan series and even then, you will be able to bi-wire speakers like these with most amplifiers.
