How much increase in yield by casing bulk substrate?
    #23957492 - 12/25/16 11:25 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

For fully colonized bulk substrate 1:3 grain spawn:coir, how much would yield be increased by casing, as compared to fruiting the bulk substrate WITHOUT casing?

Cubes don't need a casing layer.

i recently cased my first tub of golden teachers. before that i grew one without a casing layer. with the casing layer i got 6 ounces dry and without i got 4. that doesnt say much, i do think it helped with making surface conditions a bit more favorable no doubt though.

If you're trying to increase yield, then try laying down a piece of wax paper on top of your sub once you flip it to fruiting. The wax paper creates a microclimate. Once pins form, remove the wax paper.

Agreed.

If you insist on doing so, there may be some benefit by getting more moisture to the substrate.
I never found it to be worthwhile after testing both ways countless times.
Just do bottom watering if you get a big pin set, same result basically.

If conditions are right, expect to have one oz per every quart of gain.

Most of us do 4-5 quarts for every tube.

Personally I like a casing layer. It's pretty dry where I am, perhaps if I lived in a climate that saw more rain I might feel different. However when it's 5% RH (or less) in your house, that dry air just sucks the moisture from tubs no matter how tight you do up your poly. There is a difference between requiring and seeing benefits from casing IMO.

I have also seen some evidence to show that a casings benefit is somewhat of a culture preference thing. I have a clone that definitely prefers to be uncased. I have others that demand a casing. I feel like some cultures prefer different things. Find what they want and give it to them. Or find cultures that want what you are willing to provide.

This is a minimum standard. My better clones can double this.

5 quarts spawn. Cased with coir.

I like casings because they provide a better pinset IME. Casing is not neccessary and the yield may be equal due bigger fruits without casing but I love the appearance of a nice pinset.

I too live in a dry climate. I also remove the top holes when fruiting for the extra FAE. Casings have been much more friendly for my grow style. Without them I find myself misting more often, and with a casing you can mist much more at a time without any surface buildup.

That's not to say that casings are better they just suit my style of growing, and make it easier for me.

There's lots of people who prefer a set and forget approach, whereas mine is more hands-on

not to mention the casing layer itself provides an excellent platform for pinning.

While I never cased B+ and got great results, I know from repeated trials that PE yields are dramatically larger with a casing of Jiffy mix.

I know someone else who would say that :strokebeard:

Anymore I like to case, more for me than for the mushrooms unless it's PE which seem to love peat based casings.
