Building a martha greenhouse for oysters
    #23957091 - 12/25/16 07:02 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I'm currently doing a trial run of growing oysters before I move on to a bigger space, and since the bags of straw I inoculated are almost fully colonized, I've started building a martha greenhouse for fruiting them.

(Actually I don't know if it could be called a martha, as I just bought metal shelves and covered with plastic sheeting)

In the process, some questions popped in my mind and I'd really appreciate some advice .)

1) I have this ultrasonic humidifier that I can put in the greenhouse for providing high humidity; will this and a fan near it's output be adequate?

I'm planning on making a hole on the top of the greenhouse and place a little fan on it (like a computer fan or something of a similar size?) to get rid of CO2 buildup. I'll be connecting both fans and the ultrasonic humidifier to a timer so the greenhouse can be automated.

2)Will electronics working in a high RH environment cause a problem? Has anyone ever tried these?

3)Should I make another hole (and maybe place a filter on it?) on the bottom of the greenhouse to let in fresh air as the other fan exhaust?

4)My shelves look like these

Meaning, they are whole sheets of metal and have no holes on them.  Could this restrict airflow?

Well I have an ultrasonic inside mine but can't tell how long it will last.

Those shelves won't take humidity well and definitely block air flow.

Ventilation depends on how many oysters you intend to grow, in how big of area.
The ultrasonic fog sinks fairly quick in mine so opening on top is good idea.

Thank you for answering .)

How long has it been since you started using the humidifier inside the martha?  Is it constantly working?  Do you have any fans working with the humidifier or for FAE?

I enclosed mine about a month ago. It runs 70% of the time . I put it on a humidistat. I don't have a cover on the top right now.
The plan is to run a cool mist in the bottom blowing air up one side . The intake will be just outside the plastic for fresh air and it will be on a minute timer so it can run however many times or minutes per hour. The ultrasonic will probably be inside the top on the humidistat.
The shelves are heavy perforated plastic.

Quadman has a good point. Even though humid air is lighter and will rise to the top, the goal is to keep the fog moving and mixing with the air to help reduce the fog sinking to the bottom. I keep a small computer fan running 24/7. This will also aid in FAE.
