Tiny black spot at the bottom of a colonized jar
    #23956836 - 12/25/16 04:59 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get some help identifying something I just found.

The jar just finished colonizing to 100% today.

At the very bottom, to the side, there's a black spot. Not sure what it is..
After a closer look, the sides of the dot look blood orange, and it's kinda popping out of the myc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pics:

The spot is right in the corner, so it's kind of hard to get a clean pic of it. As you can tell, the bottom ridge of the jar is harder to inspect because of the thickness of the glass in that area. It kind of distorts the view.

It could be rust. Did you poke the holes without washing the jars afterwards?

Ah, I never even considered rust as a possibility.

I did clean the jars after poking the holes though. I didn't wash them put I wiped them down with a paper towel covered in alch.

If it's rust, will the cake be okay?

Thanks.

Should I chip that part off during the dunk stage or should I just leave it there?

No. Leave it there. It's just harms the aesthetics of your cake

You should check the smell of the jar before you fruit it. Just to be safe. Observe if the rusty spot grows.

Oh yeah definitely. Fruiting in 3-5 days so I'll be keeping a real close eye on it to see if it grows.

I can't picture rust making it all the way to the bottom lol.

Ah.. I guess I just have to wait to find out eh?

What's the other scenario for the spot? Bacteria?

If he poked the holes before he filled the jar with substrate, metal shards could be left on the bottom of the jar. I have seen this before in another grow log.
The environment in a BRF jar is ideal for rust (water, oxygen, iron).

The position of the spot was the reason for my assumption.
The fact he wiped the jar makes your suggestion more plausible.
Could be metabolites, too. Anyway. He should fruit this cake. Or what do you think, cron?

No..he should consolidate first:rofl:
I'd say over time gravity has drawn moisture to the bottom compacting the sub making it harder to colonize hence tje excess metabs.

Hmm. Would you guys mind pointing me towards some metabolite related educational info? I've been searching since you mentioned it cron. From threads i've found, they fruit if they're not in excess, right?

Err.. cron what do you mean by "consolidate"? My guess was spwn them to bulk..

There does seem to be moisture along the bottom ridge. I took a pic (there's red arrow pointing towards the spot). You can see moisture along the bottom, but no discoloration like I've seen in other threads. It's not yellow or anything.

This pic looks more like rust than metabolites. Tell me what you want. But I don't want to argue with you

You should let the cake consolidate for ~ 1 week after 100% colonization. You want the center of the cake colonized completely.

Metabolites can be a sign of bacterial contaminations. But this little spot does not look too bad. It does not matter if it is rust or metabolites. If a jar is contaminated with bacteria you often see a lot of metabolites (orange/yellow).

Ohh that's what it means! Got it.

Crossing my fingers and hoping for rust. If its characteristics end up suggesting otherwise, I'll update this thread before fruiting.
