I was thinking about converting my MTB to single speed, would be fun.

huh i always thought multi geared bikes were nerdy ever since i was a kid
besides its a bmx bike its not meant for extended treks
and about mechanical efficiancy a single speed is much more mechanically simple and less likely to fail than a multi geared bike equipped with derailers and other gear changing components

Never had trouble with gears which couldnt be snapped into place in half a minute, they're phenomenally reliable
The gears make climbing steep hills much, much more effecient, you can tailor the bike to whatever elevation up or down
There's no reason to forgo that except trendiness, which is the definition of nerdiness, being overly concerned with people's opinions to the point of walking around in high heels and testicle squeezing tights, gotta look cool and nonchalant so no one sees the insecurity.

maybe if you built your quads up you wouldnt be so concerned about gears and hills
the pk ripper has been around for almost 40 years so as far as trendy thats a pretty long trend
geared bikes are not "phenomelly reliable" and the minute and a half youd be off your bike "snapping gears" into place id still be riding
and for the second time these bikes arent meant for tackling steep hills and long commutes like a geared road bike would be
its a bmx bike not a bike youd wanna take the tour de france on
geared bikes are for weenies

I rode my bike over 7,500 miles in a year. I never had any mechanical problems outside of normal wear and flat tires. I cant fathom climbing the inclines I did with a single speed bike. Some inclines were smallest gears struggling at a snail pace but the way down was killer speed.

Training for triathlons..I had alot of free time to condition my mind and body. 100 mile bike rides..slap some PowerBars to the frame, top off the water bottles, and hit the road. Best part was during the training I had moved to a new town so every country road I hit was completely new and exciting. Never knew what was around the turn or over the hill.

Yeah, its 24". It's a mix of racing bike parts and some regular BMX parts. I don't do many tricks anymore since I fucked my shoulder. I mostly just cruise around, trying to look cool.
I love BMX for their simplicity, comfort, and I feel that I have much more control over a BMX than a geared bike, especially for the type of riding I do. I ride in San Francisco where there are very steep hills and I don't find most of them to be a problem. I'm a lot more fit than most people though.

Bro, do you even cycle?
I have three bikes, one single speed, one mountain, and one road. The single speed is so much fun to ride because it's much more loose to ride because of how clean it is, meaning no cables, gears, etc. It also feels great because you are the gears, so you don't have to fuck with switching gears, which is great if you're on straight sections of road and want to sprint.
I guess it all depends on what you want out of each ride though.
I will admit many people that buy single speeds only do so for trendiness, but those people are the type of people that don't ride when it's raining out, and usually ride like a bunch of sissies, fuck that, I want to rape the pavement.
I think for speed, a road bike is tops, but I think fast speeds could be achieved with a road bike frame with single speed setup, that's my next goal, to convert my road bike to SS.
There are a lot of trendy single speed brands out there, I would like to get a road bike frame, and use a single speed setup on that, that way the frame is really light, most single speeds brands have heavy frames made of steel, so are very durable, but heavy.

yo fennario I've been thinking about purchasing a bike but all this bike talk seems a bit complicated. Any specific brand that you would recommend for a big guy like me. I'm 5'11 and a half and weigh about 265 lbs. I looked at a website for a local bike shop and was surprised how many different styles there were and got a bit overwhelmed. My primary use would be riding on bike paths(both paved and dirt, gravel, tree roots
And what would be an appropriate price range for a beginner like me. Since I've started back going to gym I would like to incorporate an outdoor activity to vary exercise routine

i have no i dea why people keep saying SS is for people trying to be trendy
hell no my first bike was a SS when i was like 3
and i continue to ride them for what they are
you cant get rad on a road bike theyre not made for it
these bmx bikes have full cromo frames and forks double wall rims one piece steerer tubes and aggressive geometry made for the abuse of jumping and other tricks
thats why theyre $700-$1200 bikes because of the materials used
if anybodys being trendy its these people on fixie bikes, which i might add are very fun bikes to ride

Nah, bmx 20' and 26' have been cool for decades. Nice bike. I have memories ov the movie "Rad" right now. I've had the same bike since my teens, a 1993 Auburn CR20RX. Many a mushroom trip was spent riding on that bike in the woods and such. It's 10 feet away from me right now, but i very rarely ride it anymore. Single speeds are awesome. When i was a teen it was the mountain bikes and road bikes that were for nerds.
I cant upload pics right now to show mine, but here's a pic ov someone else's minty CR20RX. Mine is far more haggard although it would be cool to restore someday.

What do you consider fast? My sprint training sessions I'd be in the 40's mph on the road, weighed down with water, and drag (because I refuse to wear the retarded cycling stuff). I don't see how a single speed can even come close to touching multi speed bikes. I like changing gears. Once your good at it and are in tune changing gears is so smooth and natural you don't hardly feel it or think about it.

ss are faster accelerators too
