Why do we hunt psychoactive mushrooms?
    #23955416 - 12/24/16 11:25 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

This season I did a ton of hunting in the PNW, but for the past few years I haven't really tripped or been interested in tripping so it got me wondering what is the real reason for all the time and energy I put into hunting. My conclusion is I simply enjoy nature and viewing the amazing world of mushrooms which is so different and alien from our own. It just brings me to a place of gratitude for the diversity in the universe.

What is your reason for hunting? What does it do to improve your life?

Being outdoors, finding food, observing nature, exercise, those are a few reason I hunt.

Life is searching, mostly for who-knows-what. Mushroom hunting gives you a what to look for. And it's a very mysterious, curious, kinda creepy, beautiful thing that keeps you surprised. It's also a little subversive which keeps you sketchy.

Its pretty random and thus exciting, good exercise, fresh air, novel species to see, in my experience it can be almost meditative state of concentration scanning the ground for fungi.

I do it because I haven't met a person who knows much about mushrooms

I like to learn.

And I've learned through mushroom hunting "I am possessive with my things, and destructive when I have them." -My dog told me that one night.

Sometimes when I am hunting mushrooms I get stretches where my mind is filled with just white light, or images of mushrooms, but it's like I am on autopilot, almost feeling the mushrooms before I see them.

For all the reasons already listed and because it makes me feel more connected to the areas where I hunt. Which is kind of everywhere I go because it's really hard not to look for them when you know the time and conditions are right, and even when they aren't. Once I've seen mushrooms growing in a place it kind of changes for me - when I pass by later, during the other 10 or so months no mushroom visibly grows I know they are there, a mystery but not a secret. I really like finding them in urban areas, popping up reminding us that nature still does its thing, no matter how much concrete we pour.

The psychedelic experience is a great thing, but there's definitely more reasons to hunt than that. All the time I see people posting pictures of hauls that they cannot seriously expect to consume all by themselves in only one year.

I think it's hunting itself that has a lot of draw. It's like a game. It's like a scavenger / treasure / easter egg hunt of the type we might set up for kids... except that due to the drug value, the treasure is real, plus it gets us into the outdoors in environments that are interesting and fun to explore and learn about just for their own sake. Meanwhile the challenge level is just about right for grown-ups: the mushrooms are out there and totally findable, but it's not SO easy to find that most people can succeed without putting in some work, sometimes a lot of work.

So we're taking a great childhood game and bringing it into adult-level challenge and adult-level reward. That's the magic combination of the magic mushroom hunt.

Yeah its almost like a state of mediation. Mushrooms are the masters of camouflage. The masters of becoming the very fabric of what they are growing with. You really have to clear your mind and practice clear perception to find them. My first year it took me until just a few weeks before the frost to find my first active and I searched just about as much as I could have. So I think the challenge really appeals to me, but not just the challenge of finding the mushroom, more like the challenge of looking past myself and focusing my mind.

interesting thread. I started mushroom hunting to find psilocybin mushrooms. I could never find people who had them and when i did, it was so rare that i never could plan to do mushrooms(or at least as often as i wanted). I spent a lot of time looking, without any idea of what i was doing. i relied heavily on the shroomery as a resource for information, and it helped a lot, but i wasn't good at using it as the amazing database that it is. It wasn't until I went to a fungus fair that i was exposed to mycologists and mushroom enthusiasts. I saw the very mushrooms i was looking for in person because someone had brought them in to be identified. I remember how clear the bruising was and how i couldn't believe all the "bruising" i thought(or wanted to think) i was seeing in the countless lbm's i posted here to be identified. It was really cool and i decided to stick with it. I didn't really start finding much until my second or third season hunting, although my first find was allenii growing in a rooftop planter(so insane) back when people were still calling them cyanofibrillosa and cyanofriscosa during my first season. They were an emerging new novel species, and i was stoked. I started finding cyanescens and allenii in well known areas although not in large amounts. The next year I started honing in on habitat and found numerous patches, more than i could eat and more than i could pick. As the years flew by and i spent more time looking for mushrooms and hanging with people that like looking for mushrooms, I got exposed to new interesting types of mushrooms. There are millions! A truly new frontier. I get better every year, but now i look for edible mushrooms that i can add to my dinner or make ice cream with(candy caps). psilocybin mushrooms seem to hunt me these days. Its funny because often times, it will be the most unexpected moment in my day and viola! there they are right next to my car, or right where i dropped my sunglasses!!

For the sheer mystery. I love the connection they make with me and whoever else cares to come along. It's a wonderful journey. Then when I eat them as a sacrament the symbiosis is complete. We are one with each other. Mushrooms and me and whoever else might be there as well.

My brother isn't a mushroom eater but he is often around when I go hunting so he tags along. Beginning of P.subaeruginosa season one year I spot a pair of good looking ones next to the track. He sees them too so I go over to where they are.

Just some leaves that looked like them. A week later we walk past the spot and there they are again. I walk over and its a pair of mushrooms identical to the vision we both had a week before. He was with me and we both couldn't get over it.:mushroom2:

I was thinking about this as I started hunting recently and became a bit obsessive.

Part of it is the "treasure hunt" mentality.  I was always reading about people finding treasure from hidden shipwrecks as a kid.  I also liked fishing, which is another form of "treasure hunt".

I think this eventually relates to our roots as hunter-gatherers.  We are hard-wired to go out in nature and use our eyes to scan the area to find resources, as this very activity is what kept humans alive for most of our history.  So when we're out hunting we are tapping into something our brain has been molded to do and it feels good.

Then there's the knowledge of how amazing these things are, and what power they contain, and how cool and badass nature is to create these all on her own.
