PF tek using vermiculite (asbestos)

Ive been watching videos and reading some posts around here about the PF tek and the vast majority employ a substance called "vermiculite". It has come to my knowledge that supposedly, a lot of presently available vermiculite is also contaminated (to varying degrees) with asbestos, a highly toxic, carcinogenic agent.
http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/factsheets/vermiculite.htm
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermiculite
This is very alarming, and it seems to me that most ppl here are unaware of this.
I ask, did you know this? and if you did, what is your input about this?

The issue with asbestos is when it gets reduced to powder and get inhaled, it's a non issue in pf cakes IMO
Also, per your wikipedia link : " Although not all vermiculite contains asbestos, some products were made with vermiculite that contained asbestos until the early 1990s.[7] Vermiculite mines throughout the world are now regularly tested for it and are supposed to sell products that contain no asbestos. The former vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana, did have tremolite asbestos as well as winchite and richterite (both fibrous amphiboles) — in fact, it was formed underground through essentially the same geologic processes as the contaminants.
Pure vermiculite does not contain asbestos and is non-toxic. Impure vermiculite may contain, apart from asbestos, also minor diopside or remnants of the precursor minerals biotite or phlogopite."

Both of those links tell you that it was only the Libby Mine that had the asbestos and that its been closed since the 90s.

yes but it also says that about 80% of vermiculite back then was produced there, which leads me to think that theres still a lot that nasty crap around, its not like all that vermiculite disapperead or necessarily got used up or deposed of.

It's possible that some is still in circulation, this is why you should only buy horticultural grade sold by known and reputable companies.

it's a non issue, abestos is not toxic because of it's chemical composition.
if you want to be paranoid about it, spray your verm with some water before moving it around, you'll prevent the formations of airborne dust cloud. problem solved.

You should be more worried about the aluminium content, even that is too low to worry about. And is subject to debate.

AFAIK aluminium does not get into the fruits. There was a conversation about aluminium trays some years ago. Take a look if you are interested.

RR did testing on his shiitake years ago. The lab determined that aluminum was not found in the fruiting bodies. With that said, mycelium will put holes in any aluminum tray or liner.

Shit, when I was a little boy my school had to be demolished entirely because they found traces of asbestos in the walls during a renovation. No school for a year...

Asbestos is actually a remarkably safe and wonderful material, as long as you don't ever inhale it.

I could be wrong but the vermiculite/asbestos you're thinking of is probably a kind which was sold together a lot especially in Canada for house insulation. It was never a thing for horticultural vermiculite.
