More Pregnant Moms Are Smoking Weed, and We’re Not Sure What That Means

Pregnant mothers are apparently reaching for their bongs more than ever.
According to a new research letter in the Journal of the American Medical Association, more women are using cannabis products when pregnant, often to treat morning sickness. The prevalence of expecting women who report using cannabis in the past month has increased over the past decade, Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, told Motherboard.
In 2002, 2.37 percent of US women reported marijuana use during pregnancy. The rate went up to 3.85 percent who reported doing so in 2014, according to the report. Volkow added that the climb was aligned with the prevalence of cannabis use among non-pregnant women and other adults, who are also smoking more than in the past.
But the impact of weed on a fetus is not yet clear. "We have no direct evidence yet of what the effects may be, if any, at any specific point in pregnancy," Volkow said. However, a baby's nervous system begins developing the third week of gestation, before many mothers even realize they're pregnant. "We would expect that the impacts of marijuana use by the mother on the fetus would start then," she added.
With little evidence to support or dissuade pregnant mothers from using cannabis, the decision is often a personal one. One mother, for instance, who suffered from "hyperemesis gravidarum," a condition causing her to throw up so much it would harm her hers or the baby, used cannabis to combat the nausea.
"Marijuana did help. Immensely," she told VICE. "I don't think I would have made it through without cannabis."
Throughout both the prenatal period and the early years of life, the brain is continuously developing and may be influenced by the mother's own cannabis use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. As the brain forms new neurons, the baby's own endocannabinoid system (endogenous cannabinoid receptor cells throughout the body) is involved with those processes, according to Volkow. Hence, any cannabinoids from marijuana in the baby's system could have an affect. "We do not yet know the degree of risk [for the fetus], but growing evidence suggests prenatal marijuana exposure may impact fetal brain development, which could have a lasting impact on the baby," she said. "Other effects for the baby include increased likelihood of anemia, lower birth weight, and increased risk of placement in a neonatal intensive care unit."
While the effects of cannabis on babies, both prenatal and in their infancy, are still hazy, some people support marijuana use during pregnancy as an alternative to alcohol and cigarettes. A 1994 study looking at newborns in Jamaica provides evidence that cannabis does not in fact have a truly deleterious effect on newborns.
So, with little evidence supporting both sides of the debate, mothers are left to their own discretion to decide whether or not to hit the vape.

Not surprised to see something like this. The rate of alcohol use during pregnancy in the USA is around 10% though so I'm not too concerned about this...

Depends where you live. If you live where Forrest Gump lives, being slow is "find".

There's no way to know if there's a downside.
These posts on Shroomery everyday ... People spouting nonsense because their beloved plant MAY not be looked upon in a completely positive light.
I love weed. It's not magic though. It doesn't cure cancer, if it did I wouldn't have family that developed cancer while smoking it every day. It doesn't stop seizures for most epileptics - I'm living proof of this and so is my uncle that smokes daily and often seizes with a bowl in his hand. It [...]
I could go on and on. My point is that it SOMETIMES has a positive effect and BOOM everyone is spreading it as the gospel. As soon as something - not even negative - potentially not positive appears you've got folks popping out of the woodwork saying things that make no sense.
In the end, it's ignorant to drink, smoke, ... anything that you don't absolutely have to ... When you're pregnant. In the case of the mother that couldn't keep down food if that's honest then I wouldn't hold that against her.
My ex that hit me up on Facebook bragging about smoking while pregnant (Why? IDK, she was high) makes me glad I have children with someone else.
I'm sorry but I don't agree with smoking [anything] while pregnant.
Weed isn't some magical plant that's completely harmless, even to adults.
Pretending it's okay for a developing fetus is beyond logical. The truth is we don't know. As parents, if we're not sure something's safe then it's better to not give it to our children. The same applies during pregnancy.
What would you say if I gave a two year old a blunt?
I do not know if weed would harm a developing fetus nor can anyone say it is okay. The title says it all - "We’re Not Sure What That Means".
Seriously.
EDIT: In fairness, I'm not only replying to this post. This is just yet another I've seen today and it doesn't seem logical to copy/paste the reply to every one so, this is for all of the ignorant people that think they know everything.

Science dictates you can prove something exists but you can never prove is does not exist. Hence why you can prove that cannabis or any other substance is harmful in some matter but can never prove that it is harmless. So those who claim we should wait for the scientific proof that cannabis is not harmful don't have a clue about how the objective cause and effect reality we all exist in works, because they "believe" in their own subjective delusions as the real truth based on what they emotionally want to believe in IE religion or any other ideology.
