Suggest a Hiking shoe or boot
    #23951951 - 12/23/16 03:24 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I am looking to score but would like some advice or opinions. I saw the fix blade suggestion thread and I've always known there are some crafty
critters on here with good advice about various things.

I've never had a proper hiking foot apparatus and would really like to get a good pair.

I am considering something like:

Columbia Men's Grand Canyon OutDry Mid Hiking Boot

http://www.columbia.com/mens-grand-canyon-mid-outdry-hiking-shoe-1661561.html

or

The North Face Men's Hedgehog Fastpack GTX Low Hiking Shoe
http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=North-Face-Mens-Hedgehog-Fastpack-GTX-Low-Hiking-Shoe&i=832813

My price range is around 120 - though I have sizable discount through gander mtn with gift cards and what not.
I am looking for something mid-level, something good enough to were I can traverse around the Rocky Mtns. easily enough with out much issue.
Any info and suggestions will be well appreciated.  W/ the mid height shoe I worry about ankle discomfort. With the lower hiking shoe I worry I sacrifice some of the benefits of a med. height hiking shoe for a more modern look.

when it comes to hiking shoes, i really suggest going and trying some on at a rei or something.

i have high arch feet.. if the shoes arent dont support that thing i am in misery.

also, i typically wear the low ankle when roaming around, but on the lengthier treks i am all about the high boots. Ankle support is key when you are lugging around a pack.

that all being said, columbia and north face are both reputable companies. i dont really think you could go wrong, but definatly try some on first.

I like scarpa or merrell theyre lil more expencive. I mean north face are nice too. Im all for investing in qual boots n putting lotta miles on em. think its worth spending a lil extra. Any reason why your looking for low or mid? What are u planning to do with them?

if you want a real, real good boot, i'd have to recommend whites/nicks.  wescos have a decent reputation, but i've also heard complaints.

danner makes some decent mid-level boots, if you aren't looking for anything fancy.

the advantage of the whites or nicks is that they can be custom-made, as well as rebuilt for a fraction of the cost.

i love my whites, though i don't recall the model

edit:  just noticed your price range.  you might could find a sale price on some low-end danners for about 120, but, tbh, you're not going to get a well-made boot that will last for decades of constant use/abuse at that price.

I wouldn't call Danner's mid level boot's.  Ive had Danner's for 5-6 years now and I think they're great boots.  I had the Danner light II's and got them re soled once already after about 4 years of serious work and hiking.  good hiking boot, no insulation though.

Also have a pair of Danner pronghorns now and I love them!

bOUGHT a pair of redwings last year and they are completly toast now, will never buy another pair of them ever

the rainforest is the highest quality boot i've seen of theirs.  granted, i work with fire and on inclines/grades that most people won't be hiking ever or on any regular basis; but i can (have) destroy a pair of danner Quarry within 6-10 months.  at $200+ per pair, that hurts.  also, that was cleaning/dressing and waterproofing them ~every 2 weeks of use

Ya go with REI but they are damn expensive.

Local camping stores or better yet farm supply stores also have good boots.  Just remember that no matter how costly they are they will not last.  Leather breaks but some oils like mink oil can stretch that time out.

I need some new boots too.

A good bit of the boots support is in the ankle.  Wouldn't go with a low cut.  That's what jump boots go so high.

considerably better than mink oil.  not that mink oil is bad.

one can roll their ankle under the gentlest of circumstances.  mid-cut is the minimum one should consider for a hiking boot.  full-tops all the way!

Even light trail hiking you could step in a hole and fuck your ankle.  Did this twice and it just popped back in place after 6 years.  Even went to a specialist and nothing was in the x Ray.  I did feel it pop back and it felt great.  Better ankle support would of prevented that.

Go to sierra trading post and get salomans ,i,ve
Gotten them for 60 before on the close outs
Nf hedgehogs r good
Merrell moabs r decent, they only last me like 6 months though
Do not buy keen, worst made shoes i,ve ever had, stiching comes apart so fast
patagonia has a mid height hiker which gets good
Reviews and if they wear out quick u can just
return for a new pair

Thanks everyone

For the most part, I think I've ruled out getting a low cut shoe and will likely settle for a mid size shoe with some ankle support.
I want something that is mid level, versatile and is of good quality for the price.  I don't mind going a little higher
but prefer staying within the 150 range.  I've watched a few videos on choosing a boot and making sure you get a correct fit.

I'll mostly be light trail hiking but I want to be prepared for larger and more advanced treks.
I definitely want to avoid any injury's as best I can which is leading me to decide on a mid hiking boot.

I've looked up the boots mentioned here including Alico, which look quality but might be a bit stiff and would take me a little longer for me to break in, which isn't necessarily a bad thing..
I am still looking and considering pros and cons. I saw this shoe from Danner here and thought it might be a decent choice for my first pair: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Danner-Mens-TrailTrek-4-5-Hiking-Boot&i=965318

I've heard good things about both sierra trading post and Saloman gear. I don't always equate price to higher quality and I do like good deals but I also want something that has a good track record.

Thank you all, I love functional/useful equipment and gear and want to be well suited for any adventures I may trek.

as far as a boot that falls apart quick, stay away from "Georgia" brand, which is a line of cheap boots manufactured by Rocky
