ID? Kind of stropharia?
    #23951496 - 12/23/16 12:05 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
On a big log on a woodmill property in The Netherlands, it may be oak but not certain.

Gills:
Gills brown as you can see, do not know if attached but I think so.

Stem:
Appears to start out off-white, quickly develops into darker ruffles

Cap:
Easily as big as my hand, should be pretty dry, quite scaled, more like agarics than parasols, dull brown but as you can see it's not really that consistent a color.

Spore print color:
Sorry did not take one

Just hope that it's a rather common species you recognize.. it seems unlikely to me they would intentionally cultivate agaricus or stropharia at a woodmill and have logs infected all over.. Also not harvested when mature or with any visible methodics.
Almost looks like 2 species by the way, the big ones get so conchy while starting shiitake like but it does not seem likely to me there would be 2 species side by side.

It is a Pholiota species, and naturally occurring.

Wonderful, thanks very much! I don't think I've seen any of those with an online determining key...

Seems like I was slightly on the right track with the Agaricus / Stroph but-not-really, I did not know agarics are an even broader type of mushroom than [the trivial name for] Agaricus sp.

My dad thought it was a shiitake  i wish

These specimens are not quite so wooly as these can be apparently!! Made me think more coated floccose to pulverulent than hairy... I guess it's humidity dependent or something like that? Or did they use to be more hairy in the 70 :')

Agreed Alan, that looks to be it.

Neat, I didn't realize there was a proposed "subgenus" in Pholiota.  This link describes why Hemipholiota is distinct from Pholiota.
