AI event horizon
#23950783 - 12/23/16 03:14 AM (7 years, 1 month ago) |
|

I hear sometimes with the advent of super computers like quantum processors, that AI will take off and we will be enveloped by technology. To me it seems like the part that is missing is the programmers who can write code to sort everything out, processing power means nothing without the code. That would take a type of super-genius that doesn't exist in humans IMO.
I'm not saying that we couldn't destroy ourselves, that is inevitable, but I don't think our robots will be able to live on their own.
Do you agree or disagree?

The moment that AI will produce their own abillity in constructing algorithms and practically building their own new hardware by choice and not by third-party, I think that's the beginning of the end.

but to program that would take a stroke of genius is what I'm saying. I mean contemporary computers already have that capability, but we couldn't make them so smart if we wanted to.

Yeah I guess it will take like a modern Nikola Tesla to actually build that technology.

That sounds scary. But i cant imagine a computer making its own code. Thats nutz. How would it even know what to write?

The androidal apocalypse could happen, but humans would have to program it, I dont see AI spontaneously deciding to rebel.
So its basically inevitable

Deepmind can learn things. Learning anything is essentially capitalizing on trial and error. Computers run through the process of elimination very quickly. Once we (or they) surpass a critical mass it's easy to imagine things getting out of hand. I say we implement Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics.

I disagree..I'll post later as to why but the singularity and quantum computing will be a reality in this century. I should clarify, the odds of it happening in this century are pretty high.

Well for one I think it's hard to see how drastically our technology is improving and will continue to improve in all sectors. We don't have the means to create something like that now, but we're on the way with things like DeepMind and self-teaching computers. It isn't that big of a stretch to me to think of a time when we're able to program something that thinks so much for itself that it almost seems like real reasoning. From there, who knows how actual self awareness develops, but a computer writing its own code would be basically the same thing as us just learning how to do things; so natural that it just happens.
Times are changing quickly and we already have computers that run simulations (like weather patterns, big bang simulations etc..) where there are so many calculations completed that we can't even hope to know exactly how it got to the answer it got to. If AI develops into consciousness, it won't be required of us to know how it programs itself. In fact I think it will be so far beyond us so quickly that we will never know or be able to keep up.
In response to Asimov's laws - I can't see how that would actually work in reality. We have the ability to go against our programming, why would it be any different for them?

when AI reach mass intelligence they will destroy us for ourselves.
the logic we've provided them will eventually come to that decision, somehow.

ai by google has been creating its own shit lately, like its own language. it's only a matter of time before we have fully functional androids roaming around, maybe in 30 years at the least. they already have functioning man-made skeletal "muscles". those robots will be able to type on computers, lift and move things and be self aware and all sorts of other human abilities. when that time comes, the robots will be doing all the work for us including coding themselves and we will be obsolete, and free to do what we want...
or, the robots will end up killing us all KILL ALL THE HUMANS!
i think it's also safe to say we will probably be sending androids into space to gather information and all sorts of neat stuff, to go where humans can't or wont.

mmm, i disagree. ai can be self aware and reactive to its environment, which is what consciousness kind of is. it is synthetic, yes, but that doesn't automatically make it not so. the shows i listed before have great examples of ai becoming self-aware and consciousness. but simplistically, consciousness is the intake of sensory information, or more simply raw data, and producing an output based on that raw data and other things - reacting to the environment based on programming.

Our childrens children might see it happen. Not us sadly.
In my opinion we are already in it though, but an omnipotent hivemind faces no struggle so it fractures itself into plural consciousness (us)

We have currently just entered a fourth industrial revolution.
The digital age, or the third industrial revolution is over or rather has progressed to a new point, and things are going to change very very fast - meanwhile we have huge swaths of the world stuck on the wrong side of the digital divide. Part of my job is acting as a technical consultant for organizations that are trying to reach and help places like Democratic Republic of the Congo and Benin, where there is incredibly poor infrastructure that even trying to find a video conferencing solution that all their staff can access without making it incredibly expensive is difficult.
Even in our own country we have entire communities who are being left behind, coal being the biggie - how do we continue to move forward without forgetting about these people completely? That is the big question we have to answer. Because the world is not moving backwards and we will only harm ourselves trying to resist this change. All we can do is try to curate a shift in society as smoothly as we can. How we go about that..is the hard question to answer. Or the one that people don't want to try.

sad to say but hardware is about 10 years ahead of the software development in most cases.. I like to compare it to our mind and bodies, we have the hardware in place but will take some time to unlock its full potential.
