5 Days after Inoculation, Signs Maybe?
    #23950700 - 12/23/16 01:39 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

This time 5 days ago, I inoculated 8 jars. I ran out of prepared brown rice flower so I made 8 instead of 10. None are showing signs of growth yet, except one that is a bit strange. The spore syringe was a bit old, but after some research spores last a pretty long time and should still be fine. The one jar I noticed has some sort of growth is odd though. The growth is white and looks like early mycelium, but about half an inch to the right of the inoculation hole. Specifically where the tip of the needle reached vertically. Is it possible this could be cobweb or something of the like? It's driving me crazy not knowing if spores could somehow make it over there from injecting too fast or germinating like that. Normally I see growth below the exact spot of inoculation, not beside it. It's pretty small, but I can add pics if needed.

Pictures would be nice otherwise your guess is as good as ours

Also germinating can occur anywhere from 4-14days to my re-collection

Cobweb  would spread rapidly if you have it, it's grey and whispy

Patience would be the best advice at this point

Spore germination can take up to 3 weeks. But youll need to give us a pic to see whats going on. Very well could be myc.

I'll keep my eyes on it, it's just strange to me how that could happen. Here's a pic of it. I'm having a hard time with the lighting for such a small picture though. The lines show the inoculation hole and the circle is the growth I noticed. Might be almost an inch away, rather than half inch I mentioned before.

I wouldn't freak so much over where the myc decided to germinate, IME its rarely ever where I placed the needle. Water from the syringe could very well just have ran off, not a big deal. Keep an eye on it and post here again with progress or when the myc can be seen clearer

You guys told me to keep you updated, that's the reason I'm re-opening this thread. It appears as if 4/8 jars are showing signs since the last 24 hours. The initial one I was worried about seems to be the furthest along, at least in that one inoculation hole. So far no obvious signs of contamination and I'm hoping the best for them throughout colonization.

Will do, as long as I notice growth/changes I will keep posting. No reason to make a log in the wrong forum though. Just enough to make sure all is looking good. Updates to come soon.

Doesn't look like anything has started colonizing yet. But it'll be a bit before it does. sometimes it take a while yo. you will know.

Maybe a more definitive picture? Something is definitely going on here. It's early still, hence the reason I was worried when it seemed like it was in a strange spot. However, it looks healthier every few hours, along with the others showing initial growth.

Update: Day 7 after inoculation. I should keep the "be patient" mentality in my mind. All 8 jars are colonizing and all look healthy. This picture is of the first jar to show signs, and is the farthest along.

I used the duct tape to prevent excess water from entering the jars while steaming. I was leaving it on until the jars are 50% colonized or so because there is a fair amount of moving air where they are being stored.

Looks good. If there's a dry verm layer in those jars, then I would ditch the duct tape now. Those deep jars have enough of a problem with stalling as it is. The tape will only contribute to that.

IME, I don't have jars stall until they reach 75+% colonization. I mentioned they are in a room with a fair amount of airflow. I just didn't want to remove the tape until I was sure the myc was strong enough to win if something were to try to take hold. I normally use a special porous medical tape that allows breathing but I couldn't find it. If it is advised, I can move the to another place in the room where vents aren't blowing near them but it's just as warm and remove the tape. That way they get just enough air transfer to prevent stalling but not be too disturbed.

Tbh I don't think the tape is actually doing anything at all. So if you don't have micro-pore tape, how are your jars breathing? Are you using polyfil or some kind of stuffing to filter the air? Or is the duct tape blocking the air holes?

If the jars are getting air from the airflow around the room through the screw of the lid than you have got a problem and your jars are not secure. If airflow is going through that means that other nasties are going through as well. This is why you put micropore tape, SFD, stuff with polyfil.....etc the holes in the lid should be the only part where it gets GE and the nasties are filtered through polyfil/microtape/SFD..etc

so far thou they look good so leave as is. Perhaps move them away from the airflow to another room
