I think it's interesting how you can type insane things on a forum and it can seem quite rational

I mean to say, there is quite an element of social reality missing from forums - obviously. But hear me out - I posted something on BrainMeta in a total psychotic mess and it came out as this really intelligent question, on the "other side", in rational, clear-headed reality. I was just reading it today and thought HAHA, if they knew what I intended to say, they would have called the CAT team.
How effective is text at communicating what we are saying and who we really are? How 'real' is a message board? What are its limitations exactly?

English itself isnt near perfect for communicating, text form is even worse

I am 6ft 2" but online you have to choose to believe me or not.
I'd say text is only as effective at communicating as the user is at communication themselves. With millions of people online that's pretty diverse so it's probably best to try and focus on yourself and remaining skeptical and objective where possible.
That said, if someone takes the time to articulate themselves they can provide rational feedback which is nice but I wouldn't expect it as the norm.

each message stands on its own, and people react. but eventually, if you pay attention, you connect the messages with the names, and you become familiar with the message writers' personalities. after that it gets as complex as real life, even if each message is just text. some people, for instance, want you to believe they are taller here, or shorter, and it sticks.

I find texting to be very helpful when communicating. It gives you the opportunity to read as you write and consider alternatives. You can hit that backspace button if there's something you don't like or you know is hurtful to say.
With speech you don't have that, and are left at times searching for the right words. Then again, the whole idea of speaking is much more personal and when you do have the right words to say they carry a lot more weight.
It is true people can flat out lie on the internet and have that screen of anonymity concealing their face and lie. I don't say this with pride, but I am an excellent liar, so I am pretty good at sniffing out the bullshit when I see it or hear it.
There is a fine line between psychotic/crazy and genius/wise. Hard to know which is which until things happen or they don't. People say they hear voices and we call them psychotic. Psychotic is just a medical term for the things they can't explain.
Been to the psych ward myself, had a CAT scan, blood work, the works... they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. No drugs in my system and nothing weird going on in my head, but I was flat out hearing things. They labeled me psychotic and stuck me in there a grand total of 7 days. First night I was there, met the guy I was supposed to meet and immediately felt better after our talk. Everything I experienced and heard up to that point was laid out before me and made perfect sense. It fucking sucked getting there and the talk we had was surreal, but man was it worth it.
I came out no worse for the wear. There was literally nothing wrong with me other than the fact I hadn't slept in nearly 4 days and not by choice. I quite literally could not sleep. Now I sleep better than I ever have, have a better job, great girl, free from bad friends, and a Way.

They should realize before they criticize that God is the only way to Love."

I think a couple people on here said taller when they meant tougher. At any rate internet balls mean nothing. If someone wants to physically intimidate you, they have to do it real life.

Now for some parenting advice from someone who doesn't have kids.
If you intimidate your kids you're probably not teaching unconditional love.

Happiness is boring because it is always the same.
Suffering is more exciting because it's always different.
Misery is vivid, and provides the excitement of anticipation.

Misery has a very seductive enticing quality to it.
Misery pumps us up with a type of emotional fuel, yeah?
Most people don't want to look at what we get out of misery.
