Wild Camping Moab, UT vs. Rocky Mountain National Park
    #23950281 - 12/22/16 09:40 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Anybody have suggestions?  My buddy and I are considering a straight up roughing it style hiking/camping trip next year and we're not sure which place we should settle on.  We're both flexible on the timing but our preference is to take this trip sometime prior to July.

Have you guys camped/hiked in either?  Which would be better?

Keep in mind that we will be tripping, smoking, and who knows what else for the entire 2-3 day trip

Both of those are super crowded. I would suggest something smaller and more remote like Wyoming (which has some AMAZING parks).

I was afraid of this with Moab but the Rockies?  That's such a huge park and I figured we could avoid people if we really wanted to

Wyoming would be easy for me but I don't think it's doable for my friend.  He will be driving from Denver and I think Wyoming would be too far.

Yeah, between the two of them CO is definitely the way to go. It's possible you could find relatively isolated places there. I'm sure you'll have a great time no matter what. CO is unbelievably beautiful. Moab is more of an acquired taste.

You don't have to stick to just national parks either. Plenty of US National Forests that will be relatively remote, and you are free to camp in any US National Forest for free as long as you clean up after yourself.

Yeah, if it were me, I'd stay out of national parks entirely and hit up national forest or even state forest. You'll have to do more work on your end, but if you really love camping that's the way to do it.

Been to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Yellowstone is up there as far as the most crowded parks in the country, or even the world even, but you can get permits to remote camp. The park is so massive that if you did that you'd probably not even cross paths with a single human being. But grizzly bears, though...

The Grand Tetons are less hectic as far as crowds go. I camped out there with a friend -- ate some mushrooms. He was so paranoid and scared that it made the trip less than optimal to say the least, but it was still a profound experience.

I've spent a lot of time in both.

Have you been to either OP?

If not I'd personally say Moab is cooler, but I love climbing and canyoneering so Moab is just a giant playground for me,
But I may be bias because I practically live in Rockey Mountain National Park.

Ive spent a fair amount of time in the Rockies but I've never been to Moab.

Really the only thing I'm looking for is a complete break from human civilization. I live in NYC so I'm basically looking for the opposite end of the spectrum compaired to New York.  If it didn't see another human being for this entire trip I would consider that a great success. All I want is  whatever Mother Nature is willing to throw our way and the company of one of my great friends, sharing lots of drugs together.

So, given that which would be best?  And I think the name of my thread is poorly worded. We're not exclusively considering RMNP, but just the Rockies in general.

You can't go wrong with the desert.  If you go 45min away in any direction from Moab you can have any number of incredible places to hike, with no people.  Just avoid Arches and the main tourists spots, get a backcountry permit and prepare to get your mind blown.

This is my favorite spot to trip-

Well this is pretty tempting. Is a permit really necessary if we're not going to see anybody?

That pic is beautiful. Where exactly is that?  I see a lot of mentions online about hiking/camping in either canyonlands or the cliffs unit of canyon national recreation area...is that photo from either areas?

What's the situation on the water?  Will we need to carry that or will we find spots for fresh water that we can filter ourselves?  I mean it is the desert so I'm guessing no????

Utah it is!!!

Just booked two nights in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.  Our campsite is located in Chesler Park.  So pumped to take some psychedelics with this scenery...
