I used the blue latex ones, and they were snug.. Just slick when you rub them down in iso

#teamgloves. Hehe
Ill work my way back down to bare min one day but I got tired of lossing so much. My goal now is to save waste on things like plates grain and coir. Oh and most importantly time and energy. I have lost 2 killer culturers before I should have and I dont want to make that a normal thing. I'd at least like to get a year out of a good culture. Ill splugrge on the gloves and ipa. I really think sterilized tools are making a difference. Obviously they don't stay sterile working in the SAB but I got to think it's cleaner than not doing it. That said I've seen people get away with a lot less so obviously it comes to technique. But if gloves and 15 min in the PC can fix it for me I'm cool with that.

I confess that there is no need to throw out perfectly good mycelium when it can be stored up up to a year on slants in the refrigerator.

I don't sterilize tools I just wipe them with alcohol and I have good results. I flame sterilize anything sensitive and that's it.

Same confession for me. they are cheap and I can use them for other hobbies. they can be bought from any big box store. some one needs to make a handle that accepts the blades and is an inch and a half longer. it would be perfect.

500 for 14$ on amazon. I’ve seriously used one blade going on 5 years. That 50 pack will last a lifetime.

I just bought a scalpal and I'm debating on going back to my x-acto... My scalpal makes me feel retarded, but maybe thats because I've been using my x-acto for 3yrs

I'm stuck on scalpels with #10 blades. I accidentally ordered the 10's once instead of the 11's and got used to it. Can't use the normal blades now.

i confess, it took me 5 minutes to mate blade to handle the first time, almost had a bloody disaster in the process.
we got a 100 pack of #11 blades included a #3 handle ($6, sterile and indv wrap, amzn). I* was eager to get to work on plates poured and was sure the blades slid down from the top/tip of handle, broke one in the attempt and nearly cut hand open a couple more times before partner slowed me down and i took a better look at it- finally seeing blade secures by clip back end of blade to handle then push in place going forward towards tip.
*due my insistence partner observes quietly when i initially try something that she is experienced in as a microbiologist, she has full authority on safety overrides tho it has allowed for some pretty humorous cult events between the two of us.

I confess I yelped like a lil girl when I went to turn my heat down PCing some LC and the rubber pressure plug stopper doodad blew and the PC evacuated all the steam out. Never fucked that up before. Now I have a missing stopper and a useless PC. Good thing I have an extra.
~$3 ror a replacement, not bad esp with 1 day shipping.

I dont glove, I dont use alcohol, I dont even wash my hands: just rub them together briskly and go to work... I'm mindful about where I place my hands, (particularly my fingertips in relation to lid edges) and how I work(specifically, using the direction of flow to my advantage)... TECHNIQUE is how you do something, not the products you use to get it done...
Do gloves and alcohol help mitigate some of the vectors for contamination? YESSS, DUHHH!
Are gloves and alcohol necessary for stellar technique and acceptable success rates? ABSOLUTELY NOT...
I confess, I need to dose... what happened? Where did I lose my nerve?

I confess I am jealous of some of your abilities. I realize much is due to my inexperience and will get better with practice and such, but I make mistakes far too regularly to ditch my extra layer of protection and precaution. Gloves, iso, flame tools, iso jars, Lysol still air room, and most SAB.(not in this order, just things that I do) I have certainly made progress, but nowhere near the confidence of you guys.

I don't even flame tools, but I do blow through blades. I might fill up the butane torch finally and start heating blades now that I'm moving on to FH work. After burning down the last house; playing with fire has been frowned upon here.

Definitely not good advice to be passing on...
Quirk, I’ve been saving my used blades in a jelly jar, and if/when I can’t get fresh blades, I’ll wrap each of them in foil and PC them. Just a thought, cuz I’m pretty sure we do the same thing with the fresh blades
