I did notice that after I went 2.5hr at 15psi i had less issues with oats before I was running 2hrs. Idk if it was just me cuz i was more than likely the culprit of my contamination but i stopped getting the green mold after i switched it up 30 minutes. But i still use oat at 50lb for 13.5 still a good deal imo.

Ill be the first to say that i fucked myself with oats when i first started using them. Ruined at least 2 cases of jars. Said fuck it, PC'd for 3 hrs, and got my sterile technique down. The time apparently didnt matter because im back down to 1:45, but thats with a 15 minute vent to make sure the inside gets all steamy. My sterile technique was fucked and it took me alot of contaminated jars to figure it out.

Im not going to dispute any of that except i garuntee that aloha doesnt sterilize at 60psi for 2 hours. They probably get the times down to around 10 minutes with that kind of pressure, so thats probably why such a thing is plausible to them, because time is money.

IIRC they do two cycles one shorter one then a longer one that I wanna say was 60 min but all the THC has clouded my memory. Iโ€™ll have to ask my home girl who used to work for them to tell me again but I do know what she told me they do sounded completely overkill compared to what we do. They charge like 300$ for some cultures so that shit better be clean af lol.

If those percentages are correct I have no problem running oats for 3 hours too offset the risk vs cost of spawn. Oats are dirt cheap. Lately I run 2 hours but still feel my spawn is slightly sketchy at times.

Exactly, Theyre so cheap that if you must go extra in the PC, it doesnt matter. Like i said i'm back down to 1:45 so well see if it affected anything but they looked the nice dark brown they turn when you sterilize them.

I confess I do my wbs 90min 15-17psi.  Occassionally I go to 100min but I aim for 90 to just save time. I dunno how much different oats are than wbs but my jars never contam from leftover nasties that survived the run.  I cant imagine oats really need much more time than wbs, i doubt it harbors more resistant nasties than wbs

They arenโ€™t correct and I even said so in the post.( I went back and made it bold),Just trying to explain the difference between effectively sterile and actually sterile. And how fractions of a percent while seeming insignificant can make a (small) difference (in extreme cases).

For our purposes โ€œeffectively sterileโ€ is all we are capable of achieving because dry materials are super hard to fully sterilize. Getting that extra fraction of a percent sterility is going to start turning your grains dark and making them harder for myc to digest, hence, โ€œdiminishing returnsโ€

Iโ€™ve run the same grain through the pc twice and run it side by side with once cooked jars that were inoculated with the same culture And the twice cooked jars took 10-20% longer to colonize fully. That was grain from a burst bag loaded into jars so it was Pcโ€™d a total of 5 hours. I know bod fell asleep with his pc running once and had similar results (slower than normal growth) when he tried to use the 6+ hour pcโ€™d grain.

I confess. Y'all got me worried about my oats. I have been doing a mixture untill recently. I had been soaking wbs over night and boiling oats the next morning then mixing them together on the screen to dry. I find the the grains come out perfectly hydrated after that PC that way. But I ran out of bird seed and just ran oats the last couple weeks. Don't know if I just got use to seeing this culture on the mix of grains and it looks different on pure oats or what. Gonna spawn a bunch of tubs in the morning so we will see soon enough. Bird seeds not more expensive it's just that I feel wasteful with all the sunflower seeds I toss. But the squirrels are fat so it's not a toatal waste.

myc looks thin on oats. Especially if you changed recipe using the same culture. Maybe all oats make all myc bacterial, idfk  all i know if the best mushrooms, and most of them, have been grown on oats primarily and millet secondarily. Maybe it was all bacterial, but it was good mushrooms none the less. Perfect is the enemy of good.

I have had much success and much failure with oats. Looking back I confess it was most likely my cultures and technique. Since I have tried Milo, Rye, Millet, and Winter Wheat my success has gone up, but I also put more effort in my cultures/technique as well as upgrading my SAB to 200qt. Once I run through this wheat I will circle back around to my last bag of oats. Hell I've even gotten clean growth with LC recently so I'm certainly getting better at this.

Yea man its really awesome to see improvement in sterile technique, thats why i always hate to say it was a certain grain that was causing me trouble, when it was more than likely me causing myself trouble. But im a creature of habit so if something is working them stuff doesn't change till something is not working anymore lol.

Can't sleep either. Need to inoculate 18qts before tomorrows lunch. I will take about a minute per quart. That freaking slow. Yep

I more meant my sober state is under baseline, meaning i am consistenly exhausted, disinterested, apathetic, and generally dissociated. Was a different way of saying that depression can be truly crippling and obviously blow doesnt help at all but for the moment taking care of my responsibilities is more important than my long term well being. Idk wat im even trying to say the changing of the weather has been bad for me..

I guess youre right my baseline is being on a certain mixture of drugs but i really dont enjoy it and it sucks and is expensive.

I feel ya, homie. Life sucks when you're below baseline. Somehow the only things I'm able to do on those low days are mushroom related activities. Perhaps it's time to take a deep "Journey" (and maybe tweak the prescription cocktail).

I confess, I just found out a little while ago Iโ€™m about to lose power at midnight for at least 2 and up to 5 days, and I have tubs that will definitely need to be harvested and dried before then. Iโ€™m gonna need to get creative. Might have to drive them fresh over to a friends spot where theres a generator, Way too humid to consider drying outside, fuck.
