Just_A_Noob, is it working out good for you?
other night I ran an agar test, used half a sleeve of unsterile petris but found my agar was way thick. used 10g agar, 7g brf, 400ml water. Started pouring at 125ish, didn't think I'd get 10 plates done lol

hey Mycolorado! yah, we got a box of 500 from amazon, one sleeve had a hole in it (so we call unsterile) and one sleeve had a cracked plate. Seller sent 2 full sleeves to replace- so I'm using the 20 unsterile to practice with and 2% agar, noted!
and thanks Just_A_Noob! we have a 500ml bottle, was concerned about boilover in our instapot for the test run. I also forgot to subtract agar for the less amount of water used.
(count this post as another True Noob Confession, from yours truly~

Bph said: I find a well placed judo chop to be the best way to harvest appalatum. Just hit it hard with a hammer fist as close to the tree as you can it will pop right off. And don't feel bad harvesting them. In my area it is everywhere. I have harvested probably 30# this summer. Hell if you just want to try it out I got a tincture that's close to ready ill send you a bottle just PM me your address. But my hippy dippy self believes it's best to find them in your area and make your own tinctures
It is common in my area too. That doesnt change the fact they will live for 50+ years and take a long time to reproduce. Thats the same kind of attitude that lead us into the issues with deforestation we have today. “Theyre everywhere just take as many as you want”. I didnt suggest against harvesting them just to be concious of their life cycle and ecology and do so respectfully. 30# does seem excessive though, especially when there is no proof it actually does anything beneficial medicinally. But you do you, I’m just sharing knowledge so ignore it or take it and do with it whatever you will
Can't find anything that says 50 years. The ones I harvested this year were 3 years old. I counted the layers of growth. And one of the trees I took from last year had new growth about the size of my hand this year. I left that to grow larger. Not saying your not right cause I don't know for sure. I've always understood the fruits to be up for grabs. The mycelium is still alive in the tree no? Not to mention in 50 years the dead tree that they colonized would be toattaly rotted i would think. You got a link or anything? Just trying to learn.
And even more reason for me to just send you a bottle bud. I got plenty.

I’ve seen artists conk’s 2 feet + across with more rings than I could count covered in inches of moss in old growth forests near klamath on giant stumps. 50 would be exceptionally old and awesome but not unheard of. In the same forests there are trees covered in G. oregonense, which are annuals and probably have many of the same compounds in them. Not aaying dont collect them, because they are common, but advocating for being conscious about it.

Confession, Almost boarded the oat hate train. Went to a different supplier and by the alignment of the stars the manager said, "well we didn't get our own oats in this week but we got this expensive $13 a 50# premium oats if your interested.".
Cheaper than what I have been paying, a bit more dusty, but after a good rinsing,,,, sweet plump golden goodness so far,,,,,
To add to my sins, this is what happens when you try save a lousy 10 minutes in your SAB. I should have just walked away and waited for the dust to settle. It's like that little voice says, ehmmmmabye,, you should just,,,, naw!! fuck it!! I got this, im a super duper human wtdth skillz n stuffz!. good ole air born contaminates. I murdered them.

I pay 13.75 for oats with minimal dust but at least 4% corn.... They preform great though hydrate and dry quick as hell and my cultures love em. I assume theyre just local considering im ina large metropolis surrounded by the largest agricultural areas in the country.

I dont get the beat down on oats and their cleanliness lately. I mean, sterile is sterile right? If you're sterile and prep is good what difference does it make as far as contamination goes? I'm no expert I'd like to hear input.

We must be neighbors
Alot of us cultivators live in the midwest
Also grim i have no idea why people keep saying that oats are more likely to contaminate... like the PC makes everything sterile, and yes sterile is sterile. There's no degree of sterility, so the only explanation i can see for oats possibly being more prone to contamination would be its nutritional makeup. meaning that it has some sort of different nutrients that certain bacteria seem to favor. I dont have enough knowledge to assume wether or not this is the case

There are definitely degrees of sterility, for our purposes 90 min @ 15 psi is effectively sterile, but effectively isn’t perfect (the enemy of good)
If there wasnt then Aloha medicinals wouldn’t run sterilization cycles at 60psi for their grain spawn that they sell. They must have done some research to rationalize that kind of energy expenditure.
For home cultivators its all about diminishing returns, for example (not actual numbers but just to explain it )if after 90 minutes at 15psi the grain is ~99.99% sterile then after 120 mins its more like 99.995% bump it up to 20psi and its more like 99.9995%
Fractions of a percent might seem insignificant but when you’re dealing with bacterial populations in the 100’s of thousands or even millions before PC’ing it could make a difference especially in later generation grain transfer, in most cases its insignificant or trivial and our vigourous healthy cultures take over the jar and effectively prevent the other organisms from access to food which slows their reproduction even more. This is known as competetive exclusion and is the same reason why fully colonized grain/substrate is resistant to contamination.

Im not going to dispute any of that except i garuntee that aloha doesnt sterilize at 60psi for 2 hours. They probably get the times down to around 10 minutes with that kind of pressure, so thats probably why such a thing is plausible to them, because time is money.
