I was just fuckin with ya man
I have a ton of agar work I need to do myself that I've been putting off. I'm always putting off doing myco work for other stuff. Hopefully when this semester is over I'll have more free time to really dive in, just been swamped with school lately

Better schedule a cuddle session with the wife before you put the agar in the PC just in case!

Confession: pouring agar comes way before sexytime on my priority list...
Couldn't you have just reheated the agar a bit in a pan of freshly boiled water? Wrap some foil around and out of the sab?

While I have been cleaning up cultures, I take 3-4 from a good one to start the next round and ditch all previous ones. Each round I select the best 1 or 2 plates to make the next round.

the process you just described is much longer than flaming a loop and taking a small corner of myc to a new plate... I get the brf part and that's cool, but I'm not going to go through the work of pressure cooking a syringe when I can just flame my sturdy ass loop and have it just as clean.. (if not cleaner)

So you have had good luck, using just an inoc loop to pic up mycelium fragments for a transfer?

yes, just make sure it's a good one, I don't even think mine is an actual loop, I think it's made for popping black heads. I wouldn't trust those thin nichrome wires. I don't use a scalpel unless going a>g

even if you don't have a loop just a syringe, why not just use the needle tip without the PC cycle? seems like a lot of extra work

Hmmmm this has me thinking about cutting a piece of wire off a coat hanger. Grind a flat edge so I can snag tiny bits. Defiantly stiffer than the wire, but will heat up quickly.

Never tried that tbh and never wanted to. I'm not saying it does not work, but the possibility to snatch bacteria that can potentially be interwoven with the mycelium is there. Also, in the past when I tried to transfer a wedge sometimes it would get stuck high on the blade, so after trying to cut the blank plate several times to get it off without success, I'd just give up, closed the lid of the blank plate and waited to see if something grew, most times nothing grew, even though the blade should have rubbed off pieces of tissue on the blank
However this syringe method has had a high success rate for me and I know bacteria will get stuck hopelessly on one spot of the BRF plate. Also, the colony will pin heavily on this sub, allowing you to snatch a nice clean pin from a cluster.
But yeah I'm aware it sounds like such a hassle, that's why I'd only do it when methods that require less work fail.

True Confession: I have spent way too much time examining dental tools, ear picks, and wax and clay sculpture tools on Amazon and Ebay trying to think how they might be useful to agar work, transfers, clones, etc.

Confession... My girl friend and 2 year old recently moved out and some of there stuff still remains here.
Anyways long story short this chair has remained in my closet where I keep every thing and now that I'm an amateur mycologist I think it makes a great decoration. Wonder how many shrooms I have to eat to be able to sit in it.
