ShaperDreaming said: So I confess... after a lot of hard work and refinement... I'm feeling a lot better about my mycology work! My last bit of work of pouring 20 plates and inoculating them was a huge success! 0% contam rate! Every plate is great (well, I'm cleaning up a wild clone with some issues, but it came from the mushroom itself, so I put that there intentionally).
So, 3 weeks ago 40%~ contam rate. This week less than 5%~ contam! Stupid fucking happy with this progress.
Here's what I improved:
- More than doubled my cleaning schedule at home.
- Ran an air purifier in my rooms for a few days in each room (not while doing work though).
- Upgraded from alcohol burner to propane torch.
- Added a wire rack for my SAB so my work stays off the "ground".
- Watched a TON of SAB work videos and worked on improving my technique for movements and holding my utencils.
- Started running my SAB dry (no misting).
So, if you're looking for ways to improve your sterile technique there's so many little things you can do. I'm sure there's tons more I can do too, if you're having contam issues don't give up! You can do it
Im interested in my you use your SAB dry, please explain this to me?

Bod/Mushboy turned me onto it recently while I was trying to refine my technique. Here's a good thread on it: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24932780
A few TC's and a lot of long term members stated that's how they roll.
EDIT: You can follow my journey of finding this out starting here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25951103#25951103
Also, a thing I forgot to add to "improving my sterile technique",
- I started flipping my lids so that they are gasket side up (aka upside down).
I realized that my lids were pretty "stuck" on there after going through a PC, and this was also likely creating air flow in my SAB.

Thanks, I have read that thread before. It's just that I understand WHY a lot of people spray. To bring down contams and to trap contams on the walls and roof of the SAB, but why would it be better not to spray, thats what I have a hard to understanding. I trust you that it works well. Its not that

I like the idea of the wire rack in the SAB shaperdreaming, nice thinking.
though it seems curious that you'd be going the extra mile in every way with your sterile procedure yet choose to go dry. Has it been found to be useless to spray? I thought airborne contaminants being trapped by the wetness of a vessel was a concept established by some ancient famous microbiology experiment I can't remember how to find anymore. Wish I had a link, somebody will know what I'm talking about.
But if multiple TC's have found it to be uselsss, by all means, I'd just wonder if it would still be of use to noobs, but of course such things are invisible and hard to measure

I think the dry sab success may have to do with your sporeload in your environment... i live in the tropics and I have really had to refine my technique because it is warm and humid ALL year. If you are having high contamination Sharperdreaming try spray, I mix h202 in my sab spray to kill sporeload in sab and let settle? Even though still air is the name of the game, if you do kick up a current the spores are compromised. also having a small sectioned off “still room” that you can clean, to set your sab in was the deal breaker for me. And H2o2 vinegar works I know we’ve already been down that road but if high contaminate plagueing you what do you have to loose. And the final technique to pull off some clean spawn in a pinch is ( don’t hate). H202 innyour grain spawn. To get some clean masters, that is if the contams not coming from your cultures.
