Re: TRUE CONFESSIONS - of an amateur mycologist *DELETED* [Re: Caps McGee]
    #25922627 - 04/08/19 08:52 AM (4 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, so I've been away for a week because, honestly I've been in too much pain to type much, so outside necessity I've put it off.

I confess... I thought I could push my pressure caner gasket further than it could go. When I bought the caner I thought the gasket was a little loose, but the person who I bought it from assured me they had "replaced the gasket with a new one within the last year."

So, while firing up the pressure caner I got it up to the point where it was just venting for 10 min. As some of you know I just moved, and my kitchen was still new to me. I just moved the last of my boxes the night before, and I had hurt my back a little, it was tight. So, I come into the kitchen, set the timer for 10 min, then decide to adjust the caner a little as it wasn't centered on the burner and...

BOOSH! All a sudden my glasses are covered in steam, I can't see anything, I feel steam everywhere and I realize that very bad things have just happened. I don't feel the pain right away and think I've escaped somehow unscalded. Then I realize that my clothes are soaking wet... and that water is super hot.

So basically everywhere that the steam hit was soaked in hot water and anywhere that water touched scalded the shit out of me. I got "Moderate Superficially deep tissue burns," aka nasty second degree burns. My stomach got the worst of it, my shirt clung to it and just burnt the shit out of me. My wrists got it second worst, then followed by my fingers. I spent the first 6+ hours just running shit under cold water and changing cold compresses. It was hell. I finally went to a Dr. after 4 days when shit was still in constant pain. I'm better now, but still low mobility from bandages on my fingers.

So, I'm "spoiler"ing these shots because they're pretty gross, you've been warned.

Here is the progress of my stomach burn. This is 6 days of progress. The order is Day 0, Day 2, Day 6:

I didn't take a lot of pictures of my hands, but here is day 5, when they stopped being in constant pain:

So... learn from me being a fucking idiot and not checking in on what a loose gasket means. It means a lot of fucking pain (also it wouldn't pressurize, which... yeah). I think what happened is that when I moved the caner that I locked up a little since my back was hurting and it sloshed the water just enough to blast steam out around the "gasket" seal.

CHANGE YOUR FUCKING GASKETS KIDS!!!

It was pretty terrifying. The next two days after I was convinced I'd be a mass of hideous scars... I've since learned I just barely didn't burn myself bad enough for long term scaring. I should take about 1-3 month before things are starting to look "normal-ish" then up to a year before I can't see where it happened anymore. This bikini bod is going to be pre-burned :frown:

The pain is gone now at least, it's all just sensitivity. So, that's good. Took almost 8 days to stop being in constant pain tho.

That is the first PC accident I've heard about that caused serious harm to someone.

Wishing you a speedy recovery

Yup, same lol. Someone had to go first! I was embarrassed as fuck to talk about it, so I imagine there's been other small incidents no one talked about.

My PC is from the 1940s and this is what I get for insisting on a vintage aesthetic, and also trusting sellers to be honest about what they have.

But yeah, I figured it would be a good reminder to show people these things can fuck you up if you don't do good maintenance on your equipment. A very painful learning experience.

EDIT: Thanks for the well wishes ya'll. The pain is finally gone as of a couple days ago. In case you're curious, if this happens to you it'll be 5-7 days of pretty much constant pain and poor sleep, and I didn't even get hit directly with the steam (well not really).

Bummer! What kind of cooker is it? Can you give more clarity to the definition of "loose gasket"?

I've had one but all that happened was I took the lid off my presto while there was a little bit of pressure in it. I was boiling water to  cook grain. Well anyways I pushed the safety pressure valve down so I could spin the lid. Well as soon as I spun that lid to line up the 2 arrows the lid pushed up and a bunch of boiling water over flowed and I wasn't wearing shoes so I burned the hell out of my feet. Not as bad as yours by any stretch but still made my heart jump when it happened.  And burned my feet

It is a national #7 pressure canner. The gasket was loose in that I could see it was slack for about an inch or two and I had to push it into place under the seal. It would stick out a little under the rim:

If you see my amazing MS Paint art skills I have mocked up a little what it looked like. It was as thought the rubber gasket was both too flimsy/slack to hold in place (like an over stretched rubberband), and it had shrunk over time.

I would just push it into place each time and never had any problems. After this incident the "seam" that the lid and the base would just constantly hiss steam and I couldn't build any pressure, so it finally totally failed.

Well, I got the PC off FB marketplace, so some random old lady. She also gave me a proper new presto replacement (national turned into Presto at some point), so the new one is how the damn thing should be anyways.

Hmmm. Where exactly did it burst?  For a minute i thought the lid blew off and i was thankful that you didn't have a busted in face. Glad you're okay. the way you told the story made me question it was the seal but after rereading it i see that you didn't try to reset the lid, just move the PC.

Did the old lady seem nice? I would contact her and let her know. Some old ladies would offer to help you pay medical bills instantly

I think it was just that the steam burst out of the seam between the lid and the bottom. As I stated, it was steam everywhere and I couldn't see. The burns are mostly from hot water on my clothes "pasting" themselves to my body (see how my belly button didn't get hit at all?), but honestly it was all kind of a shock and a mystery.

When it first happened I was "OMG did I die? Did my hands melt?" then after a second I was like "Oh hey, I should take an inventory of myself" and when I touched my sleeves they burned my fingers from the hot water that was soaked in them. I instantly stripped down but it was too late.

She seemed nice, but I'm not going to do anything about it as I've had it for almost a year now and used it quite a bit. I hit my deductible last month for medical, so I didn't pay anything when I went in. I didn't go to the ER, just the Dr a few days later. They said I did a great job of treating it myself and gave me some "silver" to help it heal. That shit worked fucking amazing, now I'll have half a tube in the future if I need anything.

fuck!
I wish you all the bets in your recovery, that shit scares the bejesus out of me!
I nearly lost an eye when I opened a small PC which wasn't closed, I thought the lid was just resting on the base, but it was closed enough to build up pressure and POP!!!!! wang open.
they're basically dangerous as fuck when they go wrong eh? all that pressure etc.
