Slightly relevant I suppose, as he considers doing so in order to delve deeper into his obsession... I can half ass relate to the thoughts and feelings he's having: it feels like the right thing to do in his heart, but not in his mind... "am I fucking up royally? Am I making a shortsighted or selfish mistake? "
I've decided to go with my heart, but using my head to do it... I'm half killing myself to work full time AND try to start up a small gourmet production line... I figure do it in phases, even considering asking the boss to go part time, 3 days a week... not really applicable directly, but maybe it's best to finish... you're paying for it regardless, unless it's grants, in which case, you'll pay if you quit... how far in? You don't HAVE to use the degree... or even stick to ME... Something microbiologically oriented?

I've been considering taking a microbiology, horticulture, or somethin...my sister is a nurse and she keeps telling me I'm too smart not to do somethin with it... But in my eyes I am doing something with my knowledge, and I know I'm helping someone out there somewhere by cultivating...
Not to mention helping myself

perhaps off topic, but started with my confession. OP, shut me up if you want. i won't take offense.
i'm a senior, but not a full time student. little while yet to go. am full time employed at a job i'm exceedingly tired of and will be quitting well before i graduate. degrees in general are becoming less relevant, true, but no one will hire an engineer without a degree, and one cannot be a licensed professional without one. also, having a bsme is huge on any resume. changing course now, for an all together different program is out. it'd basically be starting over. my current program is my best option to double my income in a couple years. wisdom would dictate i stay the course, get the job, rake in the dough to feed the obsession. i'd just so much rather spend time mushculting than studying. but, the two can be pretty beautifully related. e.g. i modified my pressure cooker and a hotplate to make an automatic controlled sterilizer. literally set and forget. it's pretty fuckin dope, if i say so myself. and my tent project as well. feeding both obsessions. *stfu, jack*
caps, it is a scary prospect. best of luck, to you and all.
leftfield, i'd been hearing that from loved ones for years. too smart not be doing something with it. too smart for my own good is more like it.
i can say, no matter who you are, if you're not working everyday to improve yourself, your skill set, your experience, what you're capable of, or what you know, you are becoming obsolete. i think people here understand that better than people in general. people in the west, anyway.
and a bonus confession. been doing transfers. when working from the same plate, i don't always flame the blade between every transfer.

Fuck Organic Chemistry. I hated every second of it. I couldn't figure out pattern in it, and ended up having to begrudgingly learn everything parrot fashion. It's a good lead on to many other fields - chemical engineering, biochemistry etc. Pure Organic Chem is probably doesn't open up much to you, but as a co-major it is pretty valuable.

Mechanical engineering is such a great degree to have. You'll be able to apply that and the methodical way of thinking you will acquire to a wide variety of industries. I've worked with many over the years in my software development career and they've always been a good asset to the team.

I confess, i think a write up on how you modded your cooker is in order. Or at least, I'd really appreciate it. I'm sure it can't be that hard but I haven't taken the time to figure it out yet. Hell, maybe you already have one written up. Guess i'll go check.

nerdrage ought not be underestimated. especially from those of us who don't look the part. knowledge is power, that's no joke. the future is bleak for the ignorant masses.
the hotplate mod, i'm thinking of posting up, maybe just in a journal. i completed the AA PC to sterilizer conversion, and decided to go a step further and build a pressure switch into the gauge side. then bought an easy-to-fuck-with hotplate, rewired it to connect with the pressure switch and done. ... thinking about it, it's actually a fair bit more involved than that.. i did it just for the experience of completing it and seeing it work. it's wildly unnecessary, but it frees me to leave it running if i need to without worrying about blowing the plug. which is nice. if there's much interest, i'll write it up, and promptly disclaim all responsibility for anyone choosing to do it themselves.
i guess i'm working on my minor in neuropsychopharmacology. could be the tie breaker in a close hiring situation. good idea, quirk.
