I almost have... tripping that I was in a comedy club, and was everyone! The bartender, server, comedian, and guests! I (the comedian) pointed at me (the guest)and said "I like this guy, he gets me!"

Brought new meaning to the phrase "I liked to laugh myself to death"... couldn't breathe, felt like my lungs were going to collapse

That is a bummer. I have definitely done that a time or two. One time I ran my old Miro PC dry and the bottom of it bowed out like a balloon!
When it finally cooled off and I opened it the jars were cracked, grain spilled out and burnt, and the plastic lids were melted all over on top of that mess!
I was going to throw it out, but instead I cleaned it all up, flipped it upside down on a piece of carpet over concrete then I took a section of 2x4 and using a mallet I banged on the 2x4 while moving it around on the bowed out bottom. 30 minutes and some sore muscles later my Miro had a flat bottom again. I’m cooking up some grain in it at the moment!
Even though I have a beautiful AA 941, I’m glad I kept my trusty old second hand 22 quart Miro.
She’s and old hand at this and she’s good at it too!

I confess my Miro has a name: “Sally”

yes. really. senior level mech eng student speaking. metal fatigue is something very real, and in the case of a pressure vessel which has been heated to well above it's designed range, and "bowed out like a balloon" from the softening of the material due to that heat, and the pressure built up inside, the walls have been stretched, thinned, and bent to a point of greatly diminished strength. if one were to continue to use it as a pressure cooker, that one is exceedingly fucking ignorant.

ever bent a paper clip back and forth until it broke? same thing.

is this your mirro, psilopsychin? made of aluminum? unlike steel, aluminum has a definite fatigue life (reason #3 i wouldn't buy an aluminum bicycle) which has been shortened, probably by quite a lot judging by your description of your operation to restore its use. the fact that it hasn't exploded yet is no indication that it won't in your lifetime.

really, it's a simple risk vs. reward calculation. best case, you saved <$100 by not replacing it. worst case, you blew a hole in your house and died not-from-laughing, or maybe just severe burns all over your head, hands and face.

let this be my confession. right now, i'm agonizing over whether i should post this. i reckon i will, in spite of the inevitable mockery. surely it sounds like i'm trying to be a know-it-all shitbag, and maybe there's an element of that. but i'm not wrong. i make no predictions that your beloved sally will for sure light up the night sky when she blows out her bottom. i just mean to question whether it's worth the risk. if it were me, i'd use the aluminum to cast a wild mushroom.

much love.

I appreciate the advice.  Never hurts to give it when it comes to preventing a pc explosion!  The rest is up to them.

Jk tho

Cool man! I'm always down to change my views when confronted with good information. Glad you posted . That casting video was really cool, I dig that.

I'll be honest, I fucking hated materials science, I understood most of it, just didn't care for the class. But humor me here:

For the softest common alloy of aluminum (annealed, which is likely what happened to the bottom of his, when overheated) the maximum yield strength (the point before which all deformations will be elastic, right?) is no more than 83 MPa (12,000 psi). For a safety margin let's say safe operating at stresses of 3,000 psi. Now that's the pressure exerted on the vessel as if it were being stretched from either end. As in if we had two vectors with half the force at opposite ends of the material. In this system we have many other vectors from the structure of the material, so it's more complex, but I believe the stress felt by the material would still be less than the pressure of the pressure vessel, correct? Not sure here.

With fatigue taken into account lets say that's a reduction to 33% of it's former strength (10^9 cycles). Then we're at 1,000 psi neglecting the physics of the system in a conservative way. Still seems like a heck of a margin. I'm likely way off base here, just would like to understand better.

Anyway, the ORLY was actually serious, (couldn't you tell?) I was totally open to an explanation, just glad someone offered one. Seems like all the accidents from pressure cookers stem from improper use of failure of something other than the metal itself.
