I confess that I have this good feeling too. I still screw my grain prep up from time to time because I get distracted, but most of the time I don’t follow a Tek and I barely measure things and they come out great most of the time. Smug satisfaction, that is what that is.

I confess to having an internal battle with oats.  Are they hydrated enough?  is that too many burst grains? Is the bacterial problem from my innoculant, or a problem with the grains?  Did I dry them enough?  The safe prep method is too dry, but its less than optimal grow speeds….

It is anything but autopilot with those guys.  If rye was even just double the price, I'd say bye forever to oats.  Rye I can confidently prepare and use, no problem.

How many times have you ran them? I've only used Oats so far and confident i got the process down. Prep is pretty much autopilot at this point. Maybe it's a comfort thing?

About finished with a 2nd 50lb bag.  Could be an issue with the oats I use (producer's pride).  All that is available here.  Have to pick random corn, beens, husks, etc out of them.

They burst pretty quickly, before being hydrated enough.  I've tossed a few runs out in the yard for the birds and deer thinking there are too many bursts.  I see pics of some people jars, and am like, how'd you do that magic?

Try to lower the temp you're boiling at? Maybe you're heating them too fast and causing the bursting before fully hydrated. Lower temp may help.

Are you positive they aren't hydrated enough? I put stove on full blast and only get some bursts when it's ready to go.

I could never seem to get my oats dry enough.  I started cooking less and less, down to 20 minutes but then it seemed like my jars would stall out and was told they were too dry.
Last very large batch of oats I did, I was so tired, I sat on the couch and forgot about them until most of the water was boiled out.  Quite a few grains had burst but not mushy for sure.  I dried them for 24 hours in front of the wood stove with fans going and pc’d them anyway.
Despite all my doubts, I am pretty sure these are the nicest jars I’ve ever done.  I used some for G2G and some with A2G and a couple syringe to grain.  Everyone of them are doing well so far.  It is not a recommended tek I’m suggesting but I learned something valuable in my mistake.

basically if your jars come out dry you didn't cook enough. if they come out too wet you didn't dry them off enough

I bring my oats and water to a boil on high, then turn to medium 35 min boil with lid on.I like to keep a rolling boil throughout.
Strain and spread to dry(I use a window screen)anywhere from 6-24 hrs.
I like my oats bone dry on the outside before PC.
They come out just right(for me)everytime.:super:

The drying after hydrating is the trick.:awesomenod:

Sometimes I stir the hydrated and dried oats with a dry paper towel to get the majority of burst grain out. They stick to the paper for the most part. Also should help dry up any leftover moisture.

I confess, I don't have enough lids made up for the jars I have, or the SFDs or Patience to do so

Got any MP tape laying around. I had good success with converting old PF tek lids to grain lids by using 3 layers of MP tape over the inoculation holes. MP tape + tyvek would have been better, but I didn't have any . Hey, it's not ideal but it worked for about two dozen jars I tried it on. Small sample size, but I did see Pasty said it could work...

Tyvek free at every post office in the states. I've gotten away with tyvek taped on for a few runs as well. Will hold you over until you get more time and sfd's. Still need to make holes though.
