That's why I started doing slants. It gives me a reason to germinate spores even if I have too many projects going to put it to grain. Get a clean culture with plate transfers then slant it for long term storage until I'm ready to give it a go.

No, just old jars, wasnāt temperature or pressure either, just used too many times. I actually had two crack on me. Glad they were in the same batch anyway.

How old were your jars? Find em at an antique store. How many cycles would you guess they have been through

No idea. I probably have jars that are 30 or more years old. Got lots from older people not canning anymore and Iāve canned for many years before starting this hobby. I buy lots of 500ml jars for food but I donāt think Iāve ever bought a 1 litre, guess I have to start lol. Itās not a regular occurrence.

I confess I bought malt powder to use in agar instead of malt extract, and it worked but I switched over to PDYA after awhile, now I'm prepping a PF tek jar with malt powder instead of BRF just as an expirement! Should be interesting, ive used rye flour instead and that works, I like to use a mix of BRF and a touch of rye flour, may have to start using BRF, rye flour, AND malt powder if it works out although I still really like oats

That might work well for PF tek. There should be more nutrients per gram of powder vs rice flour.
What exactly is the difference between malt powder and malt extract? To my knowledge they are the exact same thing.

Malt powder is just ground up malt grains I think? While malt extract is where the malt is soaked (like making wort for beer) and then the resulting water extract is evaporated, it will be interesting to see how it works, it got good growth on the agar when I used it in that, should do well ala PF style

I confess that I went way too deep down the rabbit hole last year and ended up putting the hobby down for a bit. But man it feels good to be back!
Forgot how much fun/educational it is just browsing this site.
Hopefully Iāll start a thread soon on my āresurrectedā KSSS strain, but so far Iāve got about 75-100 plates poured over the last couple weeks and just did my first A2G (only 5 jars to get started).
I also confess itās so much more rewarding watching spores from a print you took yourself grow out and actually look decent!

I haven't caught up on this thread since I moved, but I confess... my new place is not as good as my last place and I'm depressed about it. The only benefit is that the mush space I have is much better... but there's more to life than ... WAIT SORRY

Eat some mushrooms, you'll realize there isnt much to do and to make the best of what you have, the depression will go away also.
