I think there is good value in venting for the full 10 minutes - like it says in the Presto manual. And I'm pretty sure I've read thru conversations about it in some threads here.

There can be weirdness with getting up to high enough temperature even if at 15-18 pressure if there are air-pockets under the jars or if -the water level isn't right. I'm not sure of the exact nuances on this really but I've had to tighten up my grain game a few times already and I'm still improving.

That's also why I PC my grains for 2 hours and I don't start that timer until I'm at pressure. More time but better results.

I confess I'm more worried about my SAB/sterile skills than my PC/grain game.

I also confess I forgot to ask if you are even using a Presto PC :stoned: doh!

Edit: you got multiple replies about the 10 minute thing while I typed mine out..
Carry On! :tardpig:

The gist is we want to measure steam pressure and not air-steam pressure

I'm using a 941. I had no idea venting was such an important factor to the whole deal.
Glad to finally be making some observations that are getting me closer to making some quality grain though.

While we are talking about venting, I confess ive just started using my PC and in the instructional booklet it says to place the pressure regulator on and turn to high heat until the regulator starts to rock then reduce heat until it maintains a gentle rocking motion then start your timer, never once mentions venting

It's a presto 6 quart pressure cooker doesn't have a gauge just a pressure regulator that begins to rock at 15 psi and maintains 15 psi of pressure

I'm unsure if the size would make a difference but I'd still advocate the venting procedure regardless of the manuals suggestion.

Could someone explain explicitly what venting actually does or verify my understanding of it?
So far as I understand its getting rid of the residual air pockets in the PC and replacing it with steam?

Pressure cookers and pressure canners/sterilizers are not always both.

I have a 23qt presto, and the instructions for canning stuff definitely mentions venting, however the "cooking" instructions do not.  Most likely it doesn't mention it on yours because it's meant for cooking and not sterilization, but you can still achieve temp as long as you vent properly and can reach 15psi.

yeah thats been my problem lately too. I only have one breaker so I have to turn off my heater to pressure cook and obviously also to do clean work. Gets freakin cold and takes forever to catch up.

Its also delaying my pan cyan projects :waitingpatiently:

I never vented with my 6 qt... I think the shear volume of air in the 23qt deems it necessary to vent for proper sterilization

I confess I may have been overly optimistic about 6 quarts (6 different sub strains) of Rusty Whyte that I let consolidate for about 6-8 weeks prior to spawning into small containers - even with a high spawn ratio. After a week looks like there has been almost no expansion.
I’m bummed - and ashamed.

PS: venting for 10 minutes - very good idea!
